"Let's all go on a patrol together! We'll go tonight, no mentors, just us three! In that really pretty field of flowers. By the stream. You know it, don't you? C'mon, let's go tonight!" Leopardpaw purred, prancing around the two toms. It seemed like she was getting closer to them, making Flamepaw and Trufflepaw scoot closer together until their fur was brushing.
Flamepaw's eyes widened and he glanced over at Trufflepaw, all the while trying to hide the heat of embarrassment that was radiating off of his pelt. Leopardpaw stopped bouncing around, eyes shining like she was pleased with herself. "So? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaase? I wanna spend the night with you two." Leopardpaw announced, puffing her chest out.
Trufflepaw sighed, shrugging and looking at Flamepaw as if for approval. When the ginger tom nodded curtly, Trufflepaw too nodded. "Alright. We'll go. But we can't stay out too late, otherwise we'll be too tired for training tomorrow," Trufflepaw said finally, dipping his head, "So we'll meet in the flower fields by the stream tonight, correct?"
Leopardpaw nodded vigorously, and Flamepaw muttered something under his breath that had to do with StarClan and omens, but no one caught it and they broke off from their little group in the middle of camp, all going off to do whatever they had to do. Most of it included getting new moss for the dens, and it seemed Flamepaw and Trufflepaw ended up brushing shoulders or seeing each other a lot during the day. Unbeknownst to them, the times they were doing the same activities were not just luck, but courtesy of Leopardpaw always trying to get them together.
~That Night...~
Flamepaw found himself waiting until the sun dipped below the horizon, ticking down the seconds until he could dash away from his duties and go to the flower field. When the time came, he was already on his paws, bounding through the woods until he broke out into the flower field. It was a burst of colors ranging from deep, rich reds to the softest blues, just like before. With Trufflepaw. Alone. Why did he suddenly have a feeling like he really wanted to be alone with Trufflepaw, like they had been before? Flamepaw brushed off the feeling as just platonic, shrugging and sitting quietly, sniffing the sweet flowers as he awaited his two friends' arrivals.
It was a few more minutes before Trufflepaw arrived, and Flamepaw felt the feeling he had felt before fluttering in his chest when he saw him. He looked very handsome, even though he was just like he was before, except his fur was a little ruffled. The words spilled out before he could tell himself not to say it. "You look cute," Flamepaw murmured, smiling sweetly, "I-I mean like, you look good. Masculine. Err... you look fine. Sorry. This is awkward now, isn't it? Sorry. I do that. And I say sorry too much. Sorry. Not that you're awkward, I mean, you're not awkward. I'm awkward. You aren't. StarClan, I bet I made you feel uncomfortable now. Sorry." Once he started talking, it was like he couldn't stop. Flamepaw didn't normally ramble, in fact, it was rare for him to say a full sentence, but around Trufflepaw it was like everything was disregarded.
Trufflepaw just nodded, chuckling a little and scooting ever-so-slightly closer to Flamepaw. They waited longer in silence, sniffing the air and before they realized it they were sitting side by side, fur brushing. Flamepaw let his head gently rest on Trufflepaw's shoulder, and the taller tom didn't seem to mind, sweeping his tail around the other tom and pulling him close.
Why was all of this happening? Why did he suddenly feel like he didn't want Leopardpaw to show up, and just wanted to spend the night with Trufflepaw, under the soft shine of the moonlight, in the beautiful flower field-
Wait. Under the moonlight. Flower field. Trufflepaw and Flamepaw. Leopardpaw wasn't going to show up, was she? She had planned this all from the start, and she just wanted the two of them to end up together on a... date? Was that what it was called? Yeah. A date. Between two toms. Was that weird? It was okay for Flamepaw to have a crush on Trufflepaw, right? Was that against the warrior code? He figured it wasn't since Leopardpaw's own parents were both toms and loved each other. So it mustn't be wrong, then. Flamepaw could love- err, like Trufflepaw. And that was okay.
"Leopardpaw isn't showing up," Flamepaw said, yawning and adjusting his head to lean more against Trufflepaw.
"I know," said Trufflepaw, chuckling a little and touching his muzzle kindly to Flamepaw's ear, "Are you okay with that?" the tom asked anxiously.
Flamepaw took a moment before responding. "Yes, I am. I don't think I'd mind having a patrol in a field of flowers under the moonlight again, you know." he chuckled a little, a purr rumbling in his throat.
"Neither would I."
