River that Slices Stone
Rootclan
tom || 11 moons
apprentice || hetero
|| OVERVIEW ||
Shortly after he had been weaned off his mother’s milk, River found himself without her. The only kit in his litter, and with no father to be found, he was left much to his own devices after she fled the clan. When he was younger, he had no understanding of the situation, constantly thinking that she would return for him. Over the moons, River learned. He learned what other cats thought of her, what they speculated. She ran because she had betrayed the tribe. Ran to be with a rogue, a cat who did not respect the tribe and it’s ways. She sat on a two-leg’s lap now, stroked like a kit just born into the world and hand fed daily. Rumors were endless. That was what River learned. And no one could really ever be trusted. He rarely thinks of his mother any longer, the confusing swell of emotions buried well within him as his life moves on.
River grew up side by side with Glimmer, all the way from the nursery to hunting trips together with their mentors. With his own mother absent, Glimmer’s overprotective mother had done what any queen would do and practically raised River as her own. An only kit herself, it was almost fitting for Glimmer to get a friend just as difficult and argumentative as her. Though not without their constant quibbles, whether serious or in the spirit of messing around, Glimmer and River became two secretive free spirits. Though River’s “free spirit”, if you’re putting it nicely, was much more publicly known. While the two would get into all sorts of trouble as kits, River often voluntarily took the blame, looking sheepish but fairly unbothered when scolded by one of the queens.
Nowadays, River remains the closest of friends with Glimmer, perhaps even verging on seeing more in her. While still somewhat of a trouble maker with an everpresent mind of his own, River has calmed down quite a bit. The adventures he does go on are usually spurred along by Glimmer. When alone, the tom prefers to relax and nap or maybe go for a nice walk. Yes, he's lowkey an old man. Though always quick to crack a smart joke, there is definitely another deeper layer to him. Whether or not River is even aware of it is another issue altogether.
|| APPEARANCE ||
Though still growing, River is on the larger side for a to-be. He had always been a bit spindly and lankier than most other cats, his long limbs balanced by a slightly long face. While long limbed, River is not thin or without muscle, certainly not a scrawny cat. His jaw also appears to jut out sharply, nearly menacing when combined with his demeanor. The yellow-green of his eyes stand out sharply from his blue velvet like pelt. With his deep set eyes and long face, River can seem unapproachable and immensely serious. That is, when his face isn’t contorted in amusement, wide spread ears flicking humorously. It’s easy to understand why his mother named him River, with his simultaneous combination of sharp angles and nearly liquid fluidity both in his pelt and the way he moves.
|| STRENGTHS ||
Uninhibited
River has a mind of his own. He's not particularly tied down to any code of morality beside his own and has no real interest or belief in dead cats, alive cats, or really any other cat but himself. His sense of independence is one of his strongest traits. Sometimes, he feels he doesn't require the tribe to survive, and it is not uncommon for him to silently toy with the idea of skipping town and living amongst loners elsewhere. He always acts openly, unbothered by consequences, because while he is aware of them, he almost doesn't care. This doesn't mean that he acts in a cruel manner or would not protect another, but merely that he places his own values before the ones that are encroached upon him.
Tolerant
Accepting is a synonym one could use for this trait. But accepting sounds a little too much like actively caring. River could not care less what you do, think, or believe in, so long as you aren't bothering him. Not exactly anyone's hero, but growing up hearing the nasy talk surrounding his mother, a she-cat not even around to defend herself, River has a strong preference for staying out of other cat's business and keeping his nose where it belongs. He finds it more annoying that other cats insist on holding so firmly to their own values. While his friend Glimmerpaw would know to call them bigots or accuse them of needing to evolve their state of mind, River thinks they should just shut up and mind their business. Who cares what goes on in any other cat's life? If they aren't bothering him he could care less.
Protective
Tying in to his last trait listed above, River has a strangely big brother air to him when around kits or any cat that he perceives as needing some sort of protection. For a cat so detached from his emotions, River is fairly emotionally in tune to others usually knowing when they need some emotional shelter as well as physical. Protective of Glimmer and her mother fiercely, River would not hesitate to risk serious injury or death for them. While not particularly fond of tribe life, and somewhat contrary to his loner-esque ways, he would also do the same to defend any other cat that he could help.
|| WEAKNESSES ||
Problem with Authority
By no means an unimpressive to-be, River has clear issues following directions and seems to be ready to switch gears at the drop of a hat. The orders have to make more sense of course, and probably be a little more fun. A bit fidgety under pressure, especially pressure by authority, River seems almost content not reaching his full potential.
Unmotivated
River’s casual antics paired with occasional accidental back talking to his mentor causes him to look lazy or worse, untalented. Not the case. River simply sees little point in much of the routine and lacks the discipline to learn it or the want to embrace doing things the way they should be done. Glimmer often eggs him on, her overachieving 5 Star Self pushing him to try and be better, if only for the sake of a bet. In instances where he focuses and has a stake in the matter, River excels.
