It was this moon especially that Screechstar dreaded. The hot sun seemed to burn him alive whenever he stepped outside, although the cave kept him cool enough. And he had short fur! How did long-furred cats get by in this season when it was so hot? They must be some sort of super-cat to survive the heat. Thankfully, on the other hand, Screechstar noticed that the apprentices and warriors were bringing back much bigger catches due to the prey loving the warm weather.
As the time for ceremonies approached, the weather only got more and more toasty, though it was broken up quite a bit by frequent showers. Until it returned to the same long dog days. It was one of the rare days when it was almost unnaturally cool and rainy, storms on the horizon, when Screechstar called everyone to a clan meeting.
"Cats of young and old, I gather you all here for this moon's ceremonies. Six strong kits have been waiting, some more patiently than others, for this day that they are to be named apprentices. Swanstream and Ravenbranch, your most recent litter was a large one, but I know each and every one of them will make RootClan proud to be their home. Shrikekit, Thrushkit, Turkeykit, Kitekit, Jaykit, Cranekit, please all step forward."
He paused a moment, gathering his thoughts before speaking once more. "Shrikekit, from this day forward until you gain your warrior name you will be known as Shrikepaw. Your mentor will be Echowolf, a seasoned warrior who I hope will have the patience to deal with you," he said with a little chuckle, "Thrushkit, from this day forward until you gain your warrior name you will be known as Thrushpaw. Your mentor will be... Brittlebark. I hope you two can learn to come out of your shells from time to time from this pairing, to find that you can't always rely on yourself. Turkeykit, from this day forward until you gain your warrior name you will be known as Turkeypaw. Your mentor will be Hawkspring, a familiar tom I hope helps you to be the best warrior you can be."
"Kitekit, from this day forward until you gain your warrior name you will be known as Kitepaw. Your mentor will be Hickoryrapid, who should be able to calm you down a bit whilst turning you into a fine, swift-footed warrior like your bird namesake. Jaykit, from this day forward until you gain your warrior name you will be known as Jaypaw. Your mentor will be Sundusk, a warrior who should be able to humble you, try as you might. And finally, last but not least, Cranekit. From this day forward until you gain your warrior name you will be known as Cranepaw. Your mentor will be Halfshade, whom I trust wholeheartedly to train you, as his loyalty has since been proven."
As if on cue, a booming strike of thunder sounded, a jolt of electricity slamming into the cave. Had it not been strong and sturdy stone, it would have collapsed. Rain poured from the skies, quickly adding up until Screechstar nearly had to yell to hear himself.
"RootClan, you are now dismissed. Have a lovely rest of your day," he finished, wincing a little as he watched a lone tree near the cave entrance outside set ablaze from a strong lightning strike, nearly immediately extinguished from the rain, and then fall to the ground in defeat. It was going to be a tough rest of the day, he was sure of it.
