Oh, woman that has gone astray,
The low dusk light didn’t do much to light up the den. Cedarleap lay with her tail tucked under her chin in a moss nest that was unfamiliar to her. It was nothing like her old one, still in the medicine den, where that StarClan-forsaken cat probably slept now. Wait, no, that’s not right... no one slept there now.
She made a mistake choosing him to be medicine cat. But according to voices she heard in her half-awake state, Palesun wasn’t there anymore. Neither was Tansystar. Poor Tanglespring, the young one didn’t have any family left here in MothClan.
She tried to sigh, but it was cut short and left her in a coughing fit. She placed one of her paws on her throat and tried to catch her breath. When it seemed she could breathe, though in short and shallow breaths, she looked outside. What she could see of the camp was empty. Everyone seemed to be asleep except for her. Maybe she should go to sleep. Maybe then her thoughts would clear.
She looked to Rueshine, the only company she had in this den. Cedarleap knew she couldn’t be promoted back to her original position now, not anymore. She was dying and the entire Clan could see that. Mantisclaw was leading the Clan now, wasn’t that right? Take good care of them, Mantisclaw. Cedarleap silently willed the she-cat. A new medicine cat will be by your side soon.
She inwardly sighed and finally closed her eyes. Her heart beat slowed and she found herself asleep, thoughts peaceful and quiet. During the time between dusk and dawn, when Silverpelt shone bright in the sky, Cedarleap’s heart stopped beating.
When she awoke, she didn’t see the elders’ den around her. Before her was what seemed an endless field of flowers, sparkling bright with many colors. She took the first breath where she didn’t struggle to get air into her lungs, and, oh, what a delight it was.
Cedarleap smiled. StarClan. They finally called her home, after so many seasons of walking with them in her dreams.
She stood and started her way to the nearest forest, her eyes relishing the view around her. Who would she see? Ah, perhaps Mothstar would be thrilled to see her. She chuckled at the thought. Yes, a new medicine cat had to be chosen and soon, but that could wait just a little longer. For now, the she-cat was free of any and all burdens that once held her down.
