Wasp tumbled after the butterfly, an excited grin on her face as she stumbled over her massive kitten paws. It would still be a few weeks before she became truly proficient on them, but for now her stumbling got her around the monster nest and communal two leg dwellings just fine. She had even figured out when all the two leg kits that loved pulling tails so much went out for the day, starting in the morning and ending in the afternoon. Plenty of time for playing and exploring.
She pushed herself up off her belly and out of the dirt, shaking herself off as she watched the small yellow insect flutter away and out of reach. Her grin faded, and a disappointed mumble escaped the ginger and white she cat's mouth. At least nobody had seen that...
"Nice flop!" A squeaky voice cheered out mockingly, and Wasp bristled with embarrassment as a gray tom kitten with a blue bell collar peered out from between the straight tree branches the two legs used to section off the outside portion of their nests. A quiet hiss escaped Wasp's mouth as she shook herself off. "Yeah, well I don't see you catchin' any of em!" She stammered. Even from the distance she stood at, she could hear his purrs of amusement at her retort.
"I bet I can catch one before you do!" He squeezed his chubby body out from between the branches, bell around his neck swinging and ringing with every step. "What's your name? My twolegs call me Ranger."
"I'm Wasp!"
And so the challenge was on, the two kits spending well an hour chasing any insect they saw before the dreaded two leg kits returned from the massive yellow monster.

"C'mon, Wasp, the twolegs always have good food here. If you meow at em right they'll give you some." Ranger meowed as he padded toward the foul smelling pond the two legs swam and splashed in so frequently. "Momma said they'd toss me in if I got too close to it..." Wasp whined as she followed along, the kit's paws shaking as she followed. She knew her mother would be furious the moment she smelled the foul water on her pelt, but she was rather exhausted from her littermate's rough housing from the day before.
"Just relax, stay by me if you're scared. The house folk aren't that bad." Ranger muttered back with audible annoyance, tail tip giving a quick twitch before he slipped under the thin wooden wall. A fence, as the kittypet had put it. The word sounded strange and foreign on the loner kit's tongue. Most of the words that her friend used sounded strange and foreign. Maybe that was what made it all so exciting. She slipped under the fence after him, dragging herself onto the hard stones on the other side.
The pond was swarming with twolegs, kits and adults and the strange lanky ones that were in between. The air smelled of smoke, but none seemed too alarmed by the fact. No, most seemed rather... excited, almost? A number of them splashed around in the pool, laughing and taunting each other into splashing even more. Wasp barely noticed Ranger wandering off, toward one of the two legs with gray fur atop her head and laying out on a long stone, bleached a strange shade of white in the sun and another smaller one sitting in her lap.
Wasp kept her distance as she watched her friend pad straight up to the strange two leg, allowing the creature to run her elongated paws along his spine. Her jaw nearly dropped as she watched the larger creature reach onto her food plate, offering Ranger a long piece of fresh kill. Her mouth only closed as he dropped it at her paws.
"See? Easy! The kits love giving you food, you just gotta watch where their hands go. I'll show you how, eat up!"

The leaves were turning to a beautiful canvas of reds, yellows and browns that rustled and danced with the breeze. The oppressive heat was turning to cool air, growing colder and colder by the day. The ginger spotted loner was the size of her mother now, ready to move on to a new territory like her litter mates had before her. Her mother was already expecting another litter, due to give birth any day, just enough time before the winter months truly began.
Wasp should have left the communal housing by now, but she remained. She hadn't seen Ranger in a while now, no matter how much she meowed at his door. His two legs, or house folk as he called them, knew her by now and even left food out for the thin she cat. But the door never swung open, and her friend never emerged. It was only when she saw strange house folk moving in strange brown rocks she realized that her friend had left, without a single word.
An anger consumed the she cat, and she dashed off toward the fence line. She barely felt the sharp bottoms of the wire fencing catch her hips, tearing the skin and drawing blood. All she could do was run, no longer wishing to linger in a place that she no longer belonged. Her friend had left her, there was no reason to remain any longer.
