Hadn’t she just been up here, on this ledge, announcing the apprenticeship of her kits? It was difficult to remember, even though it had been a whole six moons ago. Had they really grown up this fast? Wasn’t she just up here, declaring that two of them were to never return to their clan? She shook her head, dispelling her worse thoughts from her mind. It didn’t matter now. This was supposed to be a happy day, her remaining children becoming warriors to serve their clan proudly. She hoped they would. They’d better. She didn’t know what she’d do if these three left her too.
"May all cats old enough to climb the rock face gather here under the Highledge for a clan meeting!" Her voice was loud and proud, as befit the elegant leader. Soon, cats began to arrive below her.
She was regal, she was serious, as golden eyes flickered and glowed as she lifted her head up high and addressed her clanmates.
“We have a few more ceremonies to conduct on this fine New Leaf day,” Fine indeed, she thought, as the warm breeze ruffled her smoky fur.
“First, a few apprentices that are ready to become warriors.” She stated, glancing out over the crowd. “Pebblepaw, Cinderpaw, Smokypaw, and Yewpaw, please step forward.” She waited as they gathered below her, eyes settling on Smokypaw who had a rather bright grin on his face. Her heart thudded, mourning, in her chest, but she gave her son a soft smile in return.
“These apprentices have proven themselves worthy, throughout various hardships and training, to become full warriors of Ivyclan.” She declared, her voice ringing out over the clearing, over her clan.
“Yewpaw. You have watched your brother become a warrior before you, but still trained hard and proud to prove you deserve this as much as he does. Perhaps even more so. For this, I name you Yewshine. Shine bright.”
“Pebblepaw. You have faced much in losing your first mentor, but nevertheless persevered despite this, and despite your differences. I name you Pebblenose, I hope you will always serve our clan to the best of your ability.” A pang flickered in her chest, but the leader continued.
“Cinderpaw. You have shown time and time again how clever a she-cat can be. I’m proud of how well you’ve grown into your role as a warrior of our clan. For this, I name you Cindersight. Continue to see what others miss.” Another pang, oh it hurt, it hurt badly.
“Smokypaw,” She began, keeping her voice steady despite how desperately she wished it wasn’t. This was so much harder than she thought it would be. “You have this.. Nature, of wanting to help others. Wanting to make things easier for them, always putting a paw in the right direction of your endeavors. I name you Smokystep. Keep walking forward.”
She took a break after this, her breathing soft and shallow, though it was drowned out by the roaring cheer of her clanmates. She kept that smile on her face, even though her thoughts flickered out from under her control.
‘I name you Scorchfur, for your glorious pelt and loyal dedication to Ivyclan.’
‘I name you Starlingflight, for your adventurous spirit and your hopes and dreams.’
She reckoned, that she shouldn’t have picked out names so early.
She cleared her throat, and waited for the clan to quiet once again.
“But we aren’t finished yet! There are three more kits ready to receive new names!” She called, her eyes settling on the small little scraps of fur that were bouncing full of energy.
“Sunnykit, Stormykit, Lilykit, please step forward.”
She waited, and then offered them a gentle smile to calm their nerves. She noticed two of the girls helping their third sister, Lilykit, to reach the base of the ledge.
“Sunnykit. From this day until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Sunnypaw. I believe that Fennelskip, with his cheery attitude and dedication, will be able to teach you what you need to learn.” She hummed, and then glanced towards another one of the sisters.
“Stormykit,” She paused, her smile turning briefly sad. Oh she looked so much like Wolfclaw, it was uncanny. “From this day on, you will be known as Stormypaw. I believe that Fuzzyfrost will be best to teach you the skills you need to become a warrior.” She mused, curling her tail around the top of her paws.
Her eyes settled on Lilykit. Lilykit who was to receive her warrior name early, and retire to the elder’s den or to the nursery due to her disabilities. Sadness flickered in her gaze, but she held her head high as she addressed the small dear.
“Lilykit, due to your disability, I’m afraid I cannot let you become a normal warrior. Even if you must retire to the elder’s den or perhaps the nursery to help in any way that you can, I shall still grant you your warrior name before the eyes of Starclan.” What she didn’t expect, however, was for the small kit to interrupt her, Owlstar, during her announcement. Though yellow eyes flickered dangerously, her heart softened. Perhaps she had more of Wolfclaw in her than she thought.
