Bearstar sat out front of her den, staring at the nursery. There were many little kittens in there- she somewhat dreaded the length of the speech that would name them all- but it warmed her heart. Uncertainty had been nipping at the back of her mind every time she made a decision, even doubting a harmless kitten not long ago, brought into the clan hungry and weak. A sense of security lingered in the nursery, though, and it seeped into the rest of camp, too. Finished with her musing, the MistClan leader leapt atop the rocky outcrop. "May all cats old enough to cross the waterfall gather for a clan meeting!"
As her clan pooled below, she scanned around for a few young cats, and nodded at each as she spotted them. "Mottledpaw, Gravelpaw, Dustpaw, Stoatpaw, Twilightpaw, and Daisypaw." She waved them forward with a flick of her tail, waiting for them to step closer. "As we greet more promising kits into our clan, the time has come for these apprentices to receive their names."
Her copper eyes focused on the short-tailed calico, Mumblepaw, thoughtfully. "Your boldness is as distinct as your spots and tail, and I can see a certain fire in your eyes. I remember that desire for adventure from my own apprenticeship- keep it kindled, Mottledflame."
"Ah, Gravelpaw," the leader's eyes shifted over to the grey tom as she lifted her nose from Mottledflame's forehead. "Your sour glances and spiteful comments are no secret to me, but neither is your love and loyalty for those close to you. Your sharp stares and love for your family has earned you the name Gravelhawk."
She paused at the third- he was the third sibling of their small litter, wasn't he? "Dustpaw, your mellow personality contrasts those of your siblings. You have a gentle heart and much yet to learn, but you have done well in your training. You will be known as Dustfur."
"Stoatpaw," Bearstar gave the mostly white apprentice a curious look, "I think you're much more clever than you ever let on, and your wit is as long as your whiskers. Never let anyone break your concentration, Stoatwhisker- though don't forget that it's sometimes best to let the truth be seen."
The leader's gaze softened a little as she addressed the next apprentice. "I've noticed you're quite popular among the apprentices, Daisypaw. I can see why; you have a kind nature, like a mother among her children, and you share it with all you meet. You will be Daisysun- may you continue to bring warmth to others."
"Twilightpaw, you are one of the most skilled among your peers in combat training," her tone was mostly praising, though there was a hint of warning to it. "Our enemies will learn to fear your ire, as some of your own clanmates have learned to avoid earning your spite. Point your fury outwards, Twilightclaw, and MistClan will praise your strength for many moons."
She gently pressed her nose against the last new warrior's forehead, before sitting back up to dismiss the clan. "That is all for now. Rest easy, as these new warriors will all be watching over us tonight."
