Recently, she has felt as though she was in that river again. Darkness descending around her, as she sunk deeper and deeper, and her lungs ached for a breath that would never come. Her clanmates voices were jumbled in the current, she had to focus hard to even catch what they were saying. Her rule had become as cold as that river that had run through their old mountain home, she wondered briefly if it had become a part of her, when she lost her first life to its depths. She wondered if she would lose another to it now.
But it was time for a boost in morale. They had their kits back home with them, the rogues driven off for now, new kits and new apprentices. It was time to address her clan like she did so many time, maybe find a way to break through this inky darkness that consistently surrounded her in its embrace. The leader rose from her place in the clearing, moving over to her lovely spot above the clan with a few swift and well placed jumps.
"May all cats old enough to climb the rock face gather here under the Highledge for a clan meeting!" Her voice was loud and proud, as befit the elegant leader. Soon, cats began to arrive below her. She studied them for a moment, allowing the clan to sit briefly in complete silence before she started speaking, even her own voice sounding garbled to her at this point. Owlstar continued on despite this, and her tone grew clearer and clearer to her ears.
"We have been through much lately. I am proud to say that our kits have been brought back home to us. I would like to take a moment to honor the cats in that patrol, Longwing, Hickorynose, Briarfrost, Roseblaze, and Mudjaw, as well as the brave Mothclan warriors and apprentices, that brought them home." She stated, pausing for a moment for the muffled cheers to echo through her muddled senses. Then, with a warm smile, she continued.
"Finchkit, Sparrowkit, it makes me incredibly happy to finally give you your apprentice names." She hummed, a purr flickering into her voice. "Finchkit, from this moment onward, you shall be known as Finchpaw. You are a sweet, quiet cat, and I believe that Owlcry shall serve best as your mentor. Owlcry, as a fiery she-cat who isn't afraid of a challenge, I hope you will train Finchpaw to be the bravest warrior he can be." The leader mused, before glancing over at the other kit. "Sparrowkit, from this moment until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Sparrowpaw. Your curiosity is insatiable, and so I appoint Briarfrost to be your mentor. Even in my own times of loss, she has always been able to give answers, and I trust that she will do the same for you in your journey to becoming a warrior." She smiled, and paused as the clan shouted the new names of the newly returned kits/apprentices. She made a mental note to graduate them after their siblings, as they had already missed a bit of training.
"Kestrelkit, Foxkit, and Molekit, please step forward." She spoke, her head held high as she waited for the kits to stumble forward. "You have all reached the age of six moons, and are now qualified to become apprentices of Ivyclan! Kestrelkit, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Kestrelpaw! Raccoonmask is one of the most dedicated cats that I know, perhaps he can curb that aloof playfulness of yours," She mused, whiskers twitching in amusement before she moved on.
"Foxkit, you shall be known as Foxpaw! Timberheart is a strong and hearty warrior of the clan, and he will be an excellent mentor to you so that one day you can become a great warrior of Ivyclan alongside him!"
"Molekit, you will so forth be known as Molepaw! You are a sweet she-cat, but you'll need dedication and grace to become a full warrior of Ivyclan someday, and I believe that Cindersight will be the best mentor to guide you there!"
Owlstar paused briefly, indicating she had finished their naming, and allowed the clan to cheer for the new apprentices. But there was still one left to go, so the leader cleared her throat as an indication for her warriors to quiet down, and then she continued on to the last part of today's ceremony.
"Finally, Gullpaw, please step forward," She hummed warmly, waiting for the apprentice to move before her. "Gullpaw, for your unwavering loyalty to your clan and your dedication to fellow apprentices and warriors, I name you Gullroot. You deserve to be a warrior like no other, and I hope you will rise to your place among your peers where you belong! I wish you luck in watching over our clan in your vigil."
She dipped her head slightly, as cheers from her cats boomed into existence around her, shattering the illusion of the darkness of water. For the first time in a long time, she felt the warmth of her clanmates joy and pride settled upon her smoky fur, and she couldn't help the grin on her face and the laughter that flickered silently in yellow eyes. For this moment, she could share in their cheer, in their joy. She held onto it as long as she could.
