It had taken longer than usual for the stubborn leader of MothClan to climb to the top of his usual announcement rock. With his increasing age and constant deaths, he was rapidly becoming frailer. The warrior refused to step down, though. This clan was his legacy - he was going to lead and protect it until it killed him. It would kill him one day too. He hoped that he would meet his end at the hands of a strong enemy, but who knew - perhaps he would simply drift away in his sleep? How disappointing it would be should that occur.
Mothstar took a moment to look around his clan, The growth of it was something that he would always be proud of. To a stranger, it would be hard to believe that the clan had been formed a mere 24 moons ago. That was a sure sign of their strength, he decided. Even after he was gone, Mothstar was confident that his clan would continue to thrive.
"May all cats old enough to fight their own battles gather for a clan meeting!"
It was time to complete the ceremonies of his apprentices and kits again. It was a tedious task, but one that he secretly enjoyed. Seeing his fellow cats grow from tiny kits to proud warriors was a privilege that he could not deny.
"As leaf-fall starts, it is time for us to welcome our newest warriors. Bunnypaw, Daffodilpaw, Heatherpaw, and Bumblepaw - please come forth."
They were all strong apprentices - something that was unsurprising when Mothstar considered that three of them were his kin. So many of his kits had grown up to be strong warriors; yet another thing for him the be proud of.
"Bunnypaw, you are a kind cat that means well, and I do not doubt that one day you will be a good mother to many kits. From this day onwards, you will be known as Bunnyblossom.
"Daffodilpaw, you have created a lot of trouble over your life, but I believe that this has helped you to become a great warrior. Your name shall be Daffodilfire, after the flame of life that I believe flickers in your heart.
"Heatherpaw, you may have pathetic claws, but you are not a pathetic warrior. Your name shall be Heathermaw, to remind you that you will always have your teeth as your weapon. This was my name too once, and I trust that you will do it justice.
"Finally, Bumblepaw, you can always be depended upon to do the best you can. Before StarClan, I name you Bumblerush, for how you can often be seen rushing about camp, doing whatever task is needed."
And now for the kits. There were many of them to assign mentors too - yet another sign of MothClan's continual strength.
"Fluffkit, Fennelkit, Eggkit, Powderkit, Mountainkit, Gossamerkit, and, finally, Cinderkit, please step forward. It is time for you all to become apprentices.
"Fluffkit, your mentor shall be Sagespiral. She is a good warrior, and I hope that you will learn from her many things, including that, sometimes, being calm can be an advantage.
"Fennelkit, I believe that Plushtail will be the mentor to bring you out of your shell. Her many moons of experience will be a great resource for you to learn from. You would do well not to waste the opportunity to learn from a respected senior warrior.
"Eggkit, Wolfdusk shall be the one to teach you. Do your best to meet her high expectations and her intelligence and skill will surely help you to become a fine warrior.
"Powderkit, your mentor shall be Nightstrike. I hope that he will pass on his strength and sense of loyalty to you, and that you can both learn from each other.
"Mountainkit, I hear that you enjoy playing tricks on other cats. Your mentor shall be Squirrelspring. If you still have the energy for your games after a day of training with him, I shall be very impressed.
"Gossamerkit, Pouncefox has recently returned from his journey and he shall be your mentor. Perhaps the stories of the adventure he had will satisfy your desire to explore for some time.
"And, last but not least, Cinderkit. You were rescued by our warriors when you were young, and I am sure that you will be eager to prove your loyalty to our clan. Your mentor shall be my deputy, Brackenfall. I continue to be impressed by him every day, so I am sure that you will too."
All of the kits old enough to become apprentices assigned mentors, Mothstar allowed a moment for them to greet each other before he continued to speak.
"I am proud of what this clan has become," he stated. "We all come from different backgrounds. Some of us were dissatisfied with our former, inferior clans, some of us were loners that sought a better life, and some of us were born into our midst - but we all work together to prove that MothClan is undoubtedly the strongest there is. Do not allow yourselves to grow lazy with the knowledge, though. Yes, we may be the best now, but if we stop working hard that can quickly change. Continue training, continue hunting, and I am certain that our legacy will continue."
Speeches were not normally Mothstar's thing, but he had just felt compelled to say something today. Yes, he was certainly proud of MothClan. What had once been a mere idea in his mind had grown into something so much more, and he was glad to be a part of that.
