The coldness in the air was sudden and shocking for most; and while the nursery was relatively comfortable and well-hidden, the center of the camp was much more open and prone to letting the chill in amidst the rocks and roots of their home. Those with short coats were often the first to feel the cold - but it likely only bothered those who had never seen a leafbare before.
And for those who were living through their first cold snap? Hawk could only speak for himself, but he seemed more curious than anything. He tentatively stuck his nose out of the den's entrance while his mother slept, wrinkling it in slight displeasure, but eventually, the rest of him wriggled out with it. What little fur he had spiked along his spine, fluffing up around his body in an attempt to keep his body temperature in, but nonetheless he was tempted out to explore the drifting white flakes that casually blew in through the camp's few openings.
"Brr...Whasit?" he asked, to no one in particular, prodding a few frosty flakes with his paw before tucking it back against his belly quickly. "No fair - that's cold!" Pity...it looked so soft too. Like the plush feathers his father brought in to line their shared nest. He wrinkled his nose in disgust. "Get it out!" He prodded at it again, pushing up a few of the flakes into a little pile before he retreated, feeling the pads of his paw going slightly numb.
Diamond That Shines into camp with a scrawny mouse and thrush. It wasn't much but it was better than nothing. She had hoped the mouse and thrust would attract a bigger bird but after waiting out in the freezing cold for a couple hours she gave up and headed back to camp with what she had caught. When she padded into the stonehome she set her prey on the pile with the rest and was about to head to her den when she saw a kit playing in the snow.
She padded over to him and smiled, "the first time you saw snow I take it? It's very interesting but you have to be careful. Especially a little scrap like yourself this stuff can make your paws numb." Diamond tilted her head trying to remember his name. "It's Hawk right?" She couldn't remember the rest of his name though. "You look old enough to be made a To-Be. Your ceremony shouldn't be too far away. Are you excited?"
Hawk had been so intent on exploring the odd whiteness that he hadn't heard something creep up on him. Then again, maybe it was in his nature to not notice these things; he was destined to be the creeper, and have the more burly, protective cats serve to stop those things that would want to creep on him. In any case, by the time he noticed Diamond was there, she was practically over top of him; and he lept into the air with a squawk of shock, nearly landing in the drift himself.
"Ha! So that's what it is!" The young tom did his best to brush off the startling as nothing all that serious, although his little heart beat furiously from somewhere in the region of his throat. "Why's it so cold?! I mean...it came from the sky, but...it's not always cold from the sky!" He vaguely remembered some of his earliest memories, when the sky opened up and soaked his pelt; but then the precipitation had been warm and almost pleasant until it had stuck his thin fur to his body.
This cat seemed to know a lot more than he did - even as much as she knew his name, so he nodded his yeah. "Yahuh! Hawk. And you bet I am! My momma says I'm going to be the best prey-hunter there is one day..." But if that was true, then shouldn't he know about stuff like this snow beforehand? He was certain amazing hunters were supposed to know things like that.
