Sablestar stood up with a stretch, arching his back amicably against one of its stony walls and squinting his amber eyes as the sunlight of early morning began to pour into Bearstar’s den. Or rather his den. He still caught himself feeling awkward around entering it; too many memories of poking around the place, looking for his leader and answering her every beck and call were deep-seated in the new leader. It still smelled of the brown she-cat even! It would take some getting used to, but Sablestar found it had brought him much comfort. It was a sort of like a piece of Bearstar was left behind; a ghost to watch over the clan as they mourned and moved on.
With a yawn caught in his throat and blinking his dreamy eyes awake, he pushed out of the den and up atop the alcove where their former leader had given many announcements and even he himself a few. Shifting around in place until comfortable, he blinked with a smile out at the camp clearing for a moment, taking in the peace, before clearing his throat and calling out, ”Let all cats old enough to cross the waterfall gather here for a clan meeting!" The nostalgia of the words sent a ripple of excitement down the leader’s back.
”This moon, we do not have any new warriors, but that’s okay!! Keep on your training, Whitepaw and Creekpaw; I’m sure you’ll be warriors in no time at all!!” He shot the pair of youngsters a grin before continuing. ”Instead, we have quite a number of kits ready to be made apprentices! I don’t want to keep any of you waiting, so let’s get right into it!!”
Standing up straighter, like one bestowing honor ought to, Sablestar heartily bellowed, ”Dusk-kit, Torrentkit, and Foxkit, step up if you will!” Leaping off from his perch in order to greet the trio, he regained his footing and stood tall.
”Dusk-kit, I hear that you are quite the little spitfire! That you’re confident of yourself and dignified. So I’ve decided that Quillpine will be your mentor. She is a fine warrior with much gusto and dignity. Much more so, perhaps. I think she would do a fine job showing how to carry yourself as a warrior.” He dipped his head the younger she-cat and allowed the new mentor-apprentice pair touch noses before continuing.
”Torrentkit, it has not escaped me your somber state, and it hurts my heart, child. You need some zeal, a bit of brighten throughout your training, if I may. Applewind will make for a quality companion and teacher for you, I think. Perhaps you’ll find a few things to smile about along the way.” He gave the pair of young she-cats a warm, fatherly smile and purred.
Turning to Foxkit, he silently chuckled. For half a moment, he recalled thinking about giving the tom to Foxeyes. But then he was sure his grandnephew would likely claw his tail at the joke. Maybe next moon. ”Foxkit, you are a posh one. But I’ve heard through the grapevine that some of it’s for show. Duskypetal is a gallant cat and pragmatic member or our clan. Let him teaching you the humble life warriorhood offers you.”
As the tom’s wrapped up, the long tabby turned back to the crowd and beamed, ”Bunnykit, Rabbitkit, and Ramkit! Front and center, please!!” It was as if Sablestar were lit ablaze with all the energy he had from his excitement!
”Bunnykit, it appears to me that you may prefer a tender touch.” Turning in the direction of the Nursery, he meowed, ”Petaldawn, I know you’ve only returned to being a warrior, but I truly feel that having the responsibility of having an apprentice would do you well.” He had not missed the forlorn look upon the young queen’s face over the past few moons and the father in him only wished the best for her. Turning back to Bunnypaw, he finished, ”She is a passive warrior, but strong. Learn from her all you can; be tender, not soft.”
”Rabbitkit; a cat as even-minded and with as much grace as you have at your age has excellent instinct, I’ve heard over the moons. Perhaps it’s a sign? Whitefire is an honorable member of Mistclan and a terrifyingly adept warrior. She will teach you well!”
“And Ramkit! You have much energy and a great zeal, I’ve seen! Such makes for an excellent warrior with the right kind of training. Silverspot will act as your mentor; make sure to bestow upon his as much wisdom as Goldenmane did for you.”
Standing with his head held high, Sablestar finished loudly, ”There you have it, Mistclan! The next generation of noble Mistclan warriors have taken their first steps! Train as swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon!!" Leading off with the cheer of the new apprentices' names, he disappeared into the group of cats to continue about his day, hoping to looking after his clan firstly by getting to know them on a more mundane, daily-life basis. Now was a new era for Mistclan, and Sablestar was going to leave it in even better shape than before.
