For the second moon in a row, HeronStar was the first to arrive at the gathering. Of course, had she been aware of the difficulties the other clans were facing, she could have easily understood why it took them longer to arrive. But for her, the only clue towards something out of the ordinary was the stale smell on the borders, which she easily overlooked.
She gave her clanmates no instruction, suspecting that by now they had probably memorized what she would say.
‘Say what you wish, we have nothing to hide.’
Instead, she turned to her daughter, who was happily staring at nearby leaf. “Sparrowpaw, you know...if you want to make friends, you may want to talk to them.”
Of course, she could not exactly be one to talk, as she spent most of her life running around the forest and climbing trees rather than making many friends. The first close friend she really had was Wildstep, the MistClan cat who was now her mate and the father of her kits.
“Okay, maybe they will be able to tell me about the rocks in their territory!”
Sparrowpaw scurried off to the center of the clearing, where she hoped she would soon be joined by the other clans’ apprentices.
Having successfully encouraged her daughter to socialize, HeronStar leaped up the carriage, where she sat waiting for her fellow leaders. As she looked out over her clanmates, her gaze lingered on one tom in particular; Redbird. Just a few sunrises prior, she had learned of his secret affair with the MothClan she-cat Leafeyes, and how there were kits living in MothClan who carried his blood. HeronStar could easily guess that he would be looking forward to seeing them when they arrived at the gathering. Of course, HeronStar could not berate her warrior for what he had done, as she too had pursued a forbidden romance, and understood what it was like. Her only worry was what Leafeyes leader, EveningStar, would do if he ever found out.
