Restless nights tumbled together to eventually form a defeated Screechstar. The bright green eyes and well groomed coat had finally fallen away, leaving a shell of a leader behind. Even if he had been completely healed of the plague, his days were limited, no matter how many lives he had. Which brought him to another thought... how many lives had he lost? He lost count after the gathering incident, which had marked his fourth death, How many did he have now? Four? Five? The days were nothing but a blur of pain anymore, yet he would never forget the ceremonies.
“Cats of RootClan,” he coughed, not even bothering to walk to the clearing and just leaning against his den, “it’s time for our monthly ceremonies. I’ll be quick, there’s only two this time around and you can go back to your duties. Bearpaw, you trained hard under my loyal deputy Blackmoon and are now returned safely to acquire your warrior name. You’re strong, little one, and you make everyone proud. For you charming determination, I name you Bearcatcher.” He made sure not to mention that she was strict about keeping as close to their old ways, just like her mentor. Her fiery spirit gave him just the slightest bit of hope in his dull eyes, a mere glimmer of what had once been a shine.
“And my dearest Flutterkit. You never fail to surprise me, darling. I know you and Halfshade have grown close over the past few moons since you appeared in our nursery, and I believe he is fit for an apprentice. I now name you Flutterpaw- oh my, that is a lovely name- and Halfshade as your mentor.”
He took a moment of silence, for no reason in particular but just to rest his voice. Screechstar watched as Flutterpaw touched her nose to Halfshade, and his deputy proudly gazing towards his former apprentice. Things were good, even if just for the slightest moment, things were good. And Screechstar knew more than anyone that times like these would only get scarcer in the moons ahead of them.
