The chill of leaf-bare had already crept in, but the leader kept herself warm by constantly moving her paws. Perhaps it was her youth, as she was still the youngest leader other than BlackStar, but HeronStar was never content to sit in camp and watch the world go by. Leader or not, she was still going to go out hunting and patrolling like a young warrior. At the moment, she was returning from a hunt alongside her mate, Wildstep. The two of them had been able to take down a few squirrels, which they now dropped into the fresh-kill pile.
Around the camp, HeronStar could see that the cold was getting to some of her clanmates. Elders sat hunched in their dens, complaining of how the cold hurt their joints, warriors were frazzled from extra hunting; they really needed a pick-up. Luckily, HeronStar had something prepared that she hoped could put some pep into her cold clan.
“Cats of IvyClan! Gather beneath me for a clan meeting!” she yowled, cutting through the mid-morning quiet.
“I am happy to say that you have all been working very hard for the approach of leaf-bare,” she mewed, smiling at the cats who had come to hear what she had to say. “And you will get some more help! Many of our apprentices have passed their assessments, and are ready to be warriors.”
The she-cat purred, looking over to where Maplespring and Goldeneyes’s kits were gathered. She flicked her tail, beckoning them forwards. The first to step up was Ocelotpaw, the energetic and boisterous apprentice of Ripplefoot.
“Ocelotpaw, you shall be named Ocelotsun. Do not lose your energy and love of life.”
The fluffy furred she cat bumped noses with her leader, being careful not to push her too hard, for fear of knocking the slender she-cat over.
“Thank you HeronStar,” she purred. “I promise I wont let you down.”
The brown and white leader smiled, nodding back to the newly named warrior. It made her feel warm to hear the excitement in Ocelotsun’s mew. “I am sure you will do great things.”
Still grinning, the freckled she-cat stepped backwards, allowing one of the others to move into her place.
“Boarpaw, from now on, you will be Boarcharge, for the way you charge into every part of life.”
Next, she moved onto the apprentice that her deputy, Dustytuft, had mentored.
“Pumapaw, I will name you Pumacloud. Like a cloud ready for rainfall, you seem to gather up every bit of knowledge you find.”
HeronStar glanced over to her deputy, wondering if she would want to offer any special words for her former apprentice before she moved onto the next cat.
“Cheetahpaw, you will now be named Cheetahspots, not only for your pelt, but also your quick wit.”
Having named the last of this moon’s warriors, HeronStar allowed them to step down and go greet their clan. “Ocelotsun! Boarcharge! Pumacloud! Cheetahspots!”
