Over the last few weeks had been a struggle; but it did finally seem as if the clan was getting back to it's feet. Of course, there was still some worries: they had no official Medicine Cat now, and even Rumblepaw had gone missing: he couldn't blame them, of course. It was hard for an apprentice at the best of time, but to have no helping paws? Madness, sheer madness.
Shadowstar was doing his best to try and keep those who needed healing cared for: but especially when one of those cats was one's choice for deputy, it was hard. Finally, Birdsong had approached him and simply stated she felt too ill to continue: there was a tremble in her paws that shook her entire body, and it was simply time for her to admit the need for retirement.
So once again, Rootclan was without a deputy: but it would not remain so for long. Shadowstar had his eyes on a younger cat for some time now, and with that meeting, he was ready to announce them.
"Let all who are old enough to catch their own prey meet me in the center of our cavern." He called, setting atop his perch of sparkling stone. He still wasn't exactly used to how others snapped to attention now: Gooseberry and his brother Hawkspring coming to settle almost immediately, and Swanstream sitting up with interest even where she was lounging in front of the nursery.
"We have no new warriors or apprentices to name right now: but as Newleaf is finally upon us, I have faith that that will soon be remedied." He nodded his head at some of the younger cats, noticeable couples in their clan. He couldn't wait to here the mewls of fresh kits in their dens once more. "But we have news nonetheless. I know that Birdsong has done their best to help the clan as my deputy, but she has come to me asking that she could have her final reward. Due to her health issues, she has chosen to step down and be welcomed into the clan for the last time as an Elder. I'm sure you'll all agree with me that she has served her clan faithfully for all these years: and she is a well-deserving cat to gain protection in her twilight years."
He was no kit himself of course: but he had many years, he theorized, to show his strengths: even though the silver edge along his muzzle was more white than grey now. It wasn't lost on him that some of the clan probably though he was older than anyone there, save perhaps the ancient Cinderscratch.
"That leaves me with the important missive of naming my new Deputy. I think you will all agree with my choice, being a very strong one. This is a she-cat whom I've had the joy of watching grow as a warrior: and I hope that her relatively youthful exuberance will help to temper my experience as well. Sunblaze: I hope you will join me as the Deputy of Rootclan: And may your clanmates embrace you as I hope to."
