Bearstar perched on a damp stone that jutted from the back wall of the cave that constituted MistClan's camp. Warm orange tones filtered through the sheet of rushing water at its entrance like the last hints of leaf-fall, and the air within was turning chill with the seasons. Leadership had been unexpected for her, but she was looking forward to the challenge. Sitting up tall, she let out the call to gather, "May all cats old enough to cross the waterfall gather here for a clan meeting."
The new leader stood in silence as the cats assembled, sparing a warm glance at the nursery as the larger kits within joined the small crowd. "So leaf-fall passes to leaf-bare, the apprentices of last season become the warriors of the next. Whitepaw, Shadepaw, Slatepaw- please step forward." She paused briefly to allow the three apprentices to come up.
"Whitepaw," Bearstar directed her gaze at the large young tom, "your strength is impressive for one so young, and so is your ability to climb whatever obstacle faces you, no matter how tough. From now on, you will be known as Whitecliff." She waited a moment to allow the clan to greet the new warrior before moving on.
"Slatepaw, your ferocity has served the clan well, and so it will continue to in the tough moons to come. For your prowess in battle and your ferocity in protecting the clan, you will be known as Slatestrike." Another pause for the cat's new name to echo through the cave.
"And for you, Shadepaw. Your shadowed coat cannot hide your quick mind nor your fast tongue, and your bold determination to protect the clan has earned you the name of Shadespirit." Bearstar waited a little longer, nodding her head to allow the newly named warriors to filter back into the crowd and receive their congratulations up close.
And now for the final part of the ceremony. Waving her tail towards three anxious kits, she spoke again, "The leaves may be swept away, but the tree will continue to grow, as these young cats will do. Tansykit, Brookkit, and Robinkit- you have all reached the age of six moons, and are ready to begin your training. You will now be known as Tansypaw, Brookpaw, and Robinpaw."
She beckoned a large golden tom forward. "Goldenmane. Though you are a senior warrior, you remain eager to teach the young. Your patience will serve your new apprentice Tansypaw well."
Next she motioned for a grey short-tailed warrior to join them. "Curledbracken, you are as hard of head as you are of body. Someone as young and strong-willed as you would do well to both guide and be guided by someone not too different from yourself. You will mentor Brookpaw."
Finally, Bearstar nodded at a distinctly pale and nimble she-cat. "Lilysting. You are a hard worker- perhaps you work too hard, sometimes. Focusing your attention on someone just as determined as you may do you some good, and so you will be Robinpaw's mentor."
Bearstar let the apprentices' new names wash over the cave walls, letting the cats quiet down before concluding, "This leaf-bare will be a difficult one, but I believe in the strength of our clan and the warmth of the hearts within us all. Together, we will fight back whatever the freezing wind throws at us."
