Scorchpaw was almost surprised to hear that Fattail could relate to his troubles. Scorch hadn't had many heart-to-hearts in his life; he'd certainly tried to talk to his father, as Rainfur would come running to his kits at any time, for any reason, if they called for him... but Rainfur had been on the verge of tears the last time he'd told his father that he didn't fit in with his clan mates. Scorchpaw had heard the stories that Rainfur had become an outcast during his days as an apprentice, only to straighten up when Owlstar came into his life, but he hardly seemed like the loser he claimed to have been now. Rainfur was a normal, if slightly emotional, warrior, while Scorchpaw was beyond helping at this point.
Fattail didn't seem to think so, though. In fact, Fattail was treating him like he was totally normal, and like his problems were completely valid. Scorchpaw had never thought of blindly running through the forest to find friends before, but... maybe he should start doing it more. Fattail may claim that he was worthless, but, in Scorchpaw's mind, his understanding alone made him worth more than many of Scorchpaw's clan mates.
Scorchpaw's gaze lightened at Fattail's reassurance that he had the makings of a true warrior. It was true- Scorchpaw had always been fearless and strong, if nothing else. Whenever his siblings or Rivershine had found themselves in trouble, Scorchpaw had always been the first to come to their aid. If he could just talk normally to them, he could probably become a respected warrior one day... but Scorchpaw wasn't sure he could at this point. It was frustrating, to say the least, that his speech alone was enough to make his clan mates write him off completely as some kind of weirdo.
Fattail calling his way of speaking pretty, though, made Scorchpaw blink in surprise. "That is... the first time I've heard someone say that. Thank you, though- I am glad there is someone out here who appreciates my way of speaking, even if you couldn't understand it," Scorchpaw mewed, a bit of warmth creeping into his monotone voice. Fattail was reminding him more and more of Rainfur now... if Rainfur was able to give advice without becoming emotional. Then, Fattail went on to mention Mothstar's children, and that it's likely better for one to not be the child of someone who has accomplished great things. Owlstar was the leader who brought IvyClan to its current territory after the tragedies that befell it in its old home, a cat who had already created history. Her children had big paws to fill.
Though... Scorchpaw wondered if he couldn't fill those paws. "Owlstar's shadow looms over me constantly. It is just this weight on my back that I feel all the time, along with the eyes of those around me who expect me to be just like her. I am not, though." Scorchpaw's mouth might've been hard to see past the fluff that surrounded it from his chest, but, if Fattail could make it out, Scorchpaw's lips had curled up into the smallest of smiles. Scorchpaw's first real smile. "But I am me. Maybe I'll just have to work harder and be one of the best warriors IvyClan has ever seen... perhaps I could surpass my mother." No one could say that Scorchpaw didn't have a lot of determination. While he had previously harnessed it to chase after Rivershine, he could now use it to chase after his dreams.
"Maybe Rivershine will finally notice me, then," Scorchpaw hummed, their short talk seeming to have solved all of Scorchpaw's problems. "You give very good advice, Fattail. Perhaps we could be comrades."
