Froststar stood upon a cold, damp rock jutting out at the back of the cave that now served as the MistClan camp, her ice-blue eyes scanning her clan mates as they groomed each other and shared the day's news. 

"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather before me for a clan meeting," Froststar called, her voice echoing off of the smooth cave walls. She was silent as she watched her clan mates gather in front of her before continuing. "Adjusting to our new camp has been difficult- we've worked hard to make this our new home, and I'm proud of the great work everyone has done." The pale leader sent a smile down to her clan mates. "I'm confident we'll have many prosperous moons here. We've truly made history- and, today, we will make even more... by holding the first apprentice ceremonies in our new territory."

Froststar's gentle smile remained as a few cheers sounded from her warriors, and her eyes traveled to the two kits that stood before her, ready to become apprentices. 

"Meteorkit and Finchkit, please step forward."

"Meteorkit and Finchkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Meteorpaw and Finchpaw. Meteorpaw, you will be mentored by Brighteyes. Finchpaw, I will mentor you personally. We will pass down all we know on to you," Froststar announced.

She then looked to Brighteyes, catching his eye from the crowd. "Brighteyes, please step forward."

"Brighteyes, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training, and you have shown yourself to be a skilled hunter and calm thinker. You will be the mentor of Meteorpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to her."

Nightfur quickly joins the pack of cats gathering for the clan meeting. She nods in agreement as Froststar says they’ve made history; truly this isn’t a day that Nightfur ever thought she’d see. And then it’s time for the apprentice ceremony. The very moment Finchkit’s name is called, the dark queen’s eyes tear up. After losing so many kits to the journey and fire, after losing most of her litter to the hardships of the world, the queen thought this day would never arrive. She would never get to see her kits ascend up to apprentice, then to warriors. Now at least, Finch is an apprentice. It makes her heart swell with both pride and sorrow; she’s sad that her babies are growing up.

As Froststar calls her kit by his new name, Finchpaw, Nightfur can’t hold it in anymore. She doesn’t make a sound, but silent tears dampen her cheek fur as she struggles not to sob like a tiny kit. Her own fight with her emotions is probably the most difficult battle that Nightfur has ever fought. Her gaze stays on her kit the whole time, silently congratulating her child with her soft but proud smile.

"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather before me for a clan meeting!"

The words jerked Finchkit's attention sideways as he battered a small, breast feather from a robin around between his paws. Eyes glittering with the excitement of officially attending one of Mistclan's first meetings at their new camp. As every other cat settled down, Swallowsong by the nursery and Ravenwing somewhere in the midst, he stumbled up a little bit later because he picked up the red feather gently in his teeth. The kitten bounded over to the nursery and slipped through the entrance to the nest, setting the feather in the moss for safe keeping. He didn't want to lose it! Satisfied that nobody would steal the pretty feather, Finchkit purred and hopped out of the nursery to join the rest of the cats at the back of the gathered group, almost late (he would of wormed his way up to Nightfur, but didn't want to push past everybody else).

Finchkit's whiskers twitched as he listened, and he almost felt as if he had been a part of all the hard work although all he had truly done was absolutely nothing beneficial. Oh well.

"We've truly made history— and today, we will make even more... By holding the first apprentice ceremonies in our new territory!"

That was when his eyes grew wide. His name was called, and his body shook with excitement. He was gonna be an apprentice! Apprentice Starclan! Like his father, Rubblespots! The child bounded up to his friend, Meteorkit, and stood bouncing on his toes, hardly able to contain the excitement bubbling up within his body. "Meteorkit," he whispered, leaning into the older kit's ear. "We gonna be apprentices!" he could hardly imagine that this was reality—six moons had passed, and he could look back and remember the day he had first met his father. Left the nursery. A part of his heart tugged at him for it was just him (and Tansykit?). Of course Meteorkit was a good friend, but Finchkit had always imagined spending this day with all five of his littermates: Dapplekit, Longkit, Bumblekit, and Copperkit.

Quickly, the child would twist his head around, spotting an uplifted tuft of fur on his haunches, and he would twist to quickly flatten it, but his tongue was near an inch away. Oh well, he guessed that it would have to do. His head whipped back up as he heard Froststar begin to announce. Meteorpaw; Finchkit smiled at his friend. Finchpaw; that was him. His chest swelled up with pride.

The Mistclan leader continued with her ceremony, soon appointing Brighteyes to be the female's mentor. He tensed, waiting, and than the leader turned to him spoke. His eyes grew wide, and a huge grin exploded on his face. Their very own leader was going to train him, boy, he couldn't wait to tell his good friend, Rosespark!

Like every new apprentice would do, Finchpaw would reach his neck forwards to touch noses with his new mentor, but as soon as he was able to, Finchpaw would quickly bat at Meteorpaw's ears, make a one eighty, and head straight to his mother.

"Mama, I have paws!" he would purr, bounding to her side, heart swimming with pride. Finchpaw would press his flank against her own, purring loudly. However, as he pulled back, she was crying. Was she sad..? "Don't cry, mama." he would gasp, immediately attempting to lick away her tears.

“I’m not crying because I’m sad. I’m crying because I am just so proud of you, Finchpaw.” Nightfur sniffles, smiling proudly down at her beloved son though her gaze holds a bit of sorrow too; she also believed that all her six kits would have this moment together, but she knows that Copperkit, Bumblekit, Dapplekit, and Longkit are all smiling down on their remaining siblings today. She nuzzles Finchpaw’s head. “Now you better be nice to your mentor. She’s gonna teach you all about how to be a great warrior, so you do exactly what she tells you. You’ll be a great apprentice, I know you will, Finchpaw. You’ll be a great warrior, too.” Nightfur knows her words are correct.

She’ll have to remember to go hunting with her children sometime, after they’ve gotten hunting lessons. Maybe her kits will even teach her something? They’ve grown up so fast… though when she looks at them, she’ll always see them as tiny kits, roaming around in the nursery and wanting to explore the massive world of their old camp.

It was today and Meteorkit was just now remembering it.
She bolted to the back of the cave and quickly sat down before their clan leader, Froststar.
"Adjusting to our new camp has been difficult- we've worked hard to make this our new home, and I'm proud of the great work everyone has done."
"I'm confident we'll have many prosperous moons here. We've truly made history- and, today, we will make even more... by holding the first apprentice ceremonies in our new territory."
Meteorkit grinned widely, Finchkit coming up next to her.
"Meteorkit, we gonna be apprentices!"
"Yea, we are!" She excitedly whispered back to the younger kit.
Froststar called her first, then Finchkit, by their new names.
"From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Meteorpaw and Finchpaw. Meteorpaw, you will be mentored by Brighteyes. Finchpaw, I will mentor you personally. We will pass down all we know on to you,"
Meteorpaw.
It felt pretty weird to be called that after having the name 'Meteorkit' for so long.
Now, Froststar would announce her mentor.
"Brighteyes, please step forward."
Brighteyes!
She was going to have Brighteyes as a mentor!
Meteorpaw stepped forward and touched noses with her mentor, only to be cuffed around the ears by Finchpaw after.
"Finchpaw!" She meowed after him, grinning.
She saw that he was going up to his mother, Nightfur, the same queen that had also raised her but not as a daughter.
She trotted up to her, seeing that she was crying out of happiness.
"Nightfur! Finchpaw's gonna be one of the best apprentices."
"But I'm going to be the first best, of course~" She joked, laughing and smiling at Finchpaw.
Meteorpaw and Finchpaw didn't have to end up becoming apprentices in twolegplace, like she'd always imagined.
