appearance
[black smoke w/ olive eyes]
it's a well-known fact that the maine coon is one of the largest breeds of domestic cat, and this proves true in smokeshade's case. this black beauty is used to towering over smaller breeds and, until he reaches five years old, he won't reach his full size. unfortunately, this creates a certain phenomenon called 'lumbering giant,' where, due to his size, smoke often finds himself stumbling and generally appearing slightly clumsy. it's hard to notice most of the time but he feels every trip and stumble.
the quality others are drawn to first, however, isn't his size, but his fur colour. it's common for mistclan to have numerous solid pelts within their ranks and smokeshade gladly joins the ranks: his fur is a deep black that slightly lightens up at the ends of the fur that lines his chest and stomach. it catches the light in day which gives the illusion that his fur is much lighter than it is, a deep contrast to how easy it is for him the meld into the shadows when night falls. however pretty it looks, though, it seems to attract burrs and dust to stick to it, prompting constant maintenance to keep his coat free from dirt. his tail is the worst. a large bushy, draping curtain of fur that gently strokes every molecule of dust from the floor into his fur. not to mention how he sheds, despite it happening only at certain times during the month, can cause his bedding to be decorated with more fur that feathers and grass.
the next feature of interest is his eyes, which are much less interesting compared to the rest of him, almost a disappointment. they are the green typical of felines that have a yellowing around the edges. due to their ordinary there really isn't much to say about them other than a thin straight-edged scar that narrowly missed his eyes, appearing above and below his left green optic - a training incident when a fellow apprentice got too enthusiastic and unsheathed their claws, delaying his warriorship ceremony until recovery. it isn't the only scar he has, many the results of tussles with rouges or skirmishes, but it was he first and the most prominent.

personality
[misanthrope/sarcastic/restless/cyncial/protective]
for lack of a better word, smokeshade is an asshole. he dislikes overly-bubbly types and even just mere friendliness is enough to have him bristling. it's unusual to hear him say anything but short, to-the-point sentences and getting him to talk about his feelings is nearly impossible. ask him a dumb question and he'll respond tartly so be prepared. to an outsider, it would appear like he genuinely dislikes being around company and he'll be happy to let you believe that, but it'll be untrue. deep inside, smokeshade does enjoy company, he enjoys companionship, but he doesn't enjoy pointless chatter and actively tries to avoid it.
another part of his personality is his restlessness: due to a warrior's active lifestyle, smokeshade has developed a 'need' to be active. he gets agitated if he hasn't got something to due or hasn't done anything for a long period of time, usually resulting in him tagging along on a border patrol or leaving the camp for some lone hunting. smokeshade definitely enjoys the rush of hunting and the thrill of staying alert on a border patrol, but he doesn't have a hunger for the kill, knowing when to stop, even if he is reluctant when he has to run-off a troublesome rouge and not end the threat forever.
the last element of his personality is his general attitude towards his clan. smokeshade is a proud mistclan warrior and will willingly protect any member of his clan but will usually not interact with those not part of his clan, even at gatherings. he may partake in a few conversations about notable events that all clans were involved in and occasionally talk about possible threats but will never talk about a threat that targets his clan alone. to him that's just common sense.
----
ever since he's met his mate lilycloud, his prickly personality had softened quite a bit, but especially towards her. he's still reserved and sarcastic but it's obvious that fatherhood has love has calmed him down.

history
parents: npc xx npc
apprentices: lilycloud, flintfur, mossfoot
offspring: acornpaw, rushpaw, flamepaw [adopted]
smokeshade was born on a strange night. His mother knew that she was due to give birth any day soon but was growing rather impatient with being shackled to the queen's den and, in an act of rebellion, decided to go on one last evening walk before beginning her life as a new mother. however, although smoke inherited her restless nature from his mother, she wasn't the type to just walk out without letting anyone know where she was going and asked the father to accompany her in case she needed help. the walk went well until they were starting to consider going back, already having walked deep into the territory, when they spotted the tell-tale grey tendrils weaving their way into the air, releasing a dark smell. a fire.
they moved toward it, expecting the worst, but it was only a small fire and was easily put out with no problems... until the kits decided it was time to be born into the world and so they were born. smoke still rising from the dampened foliage and the bitter smell still strong in the air. it was what promoted smoke's name as he was the firstborn and smoke was the most noticeable thing around. it was an easy birth, although the father had to race back to camp to help him get mother and kits back safely as all were too tired to walk back unaided.
---
that was the start of his life. from there, smokeshade had a reasonable normal childhood into apprenticeship when his father became ill with a disease that gradually rendered him unable to partake in the general warrior duties and was forced into early retirement into the elder's den, much to his mother's disappointment. although both are still alive, they don't have as big an involvement in his life as they did when he was younger as his mother, although still a warrior, prefers to spend all her spare time with her mate who weakens more everyday. he has no spite or blame for them however, he can look after himself and would prefer his mother to spend all the remaining time his father has with her nearby.
he continued his duties as a warrior normally and one day, bearstar gave him his first apprentice. this apprentice went by the name of lilypaw and later became lilycloud once given her warrior name. it was shortly after this that smokeshade found out he'd developed feelings for the chocolate-furred feline and, even amazingly, she returned these feelings. they became mates shortly after confessing their feelings for each other and are now the proud parents to two tom-kits, who they named rushkit and acornkit.
