There was something about mornings. Rushfeather was an early bird. He usually wasn't up too late, and was always early to rise. He fluffed his fur, ready for his dawn patrol like everyone else. He peered around camp, not seeing many awake. Most of them would be on the sunhigh and moon high patrol. He narrowed his eyes ever so slightly man these cats could sleep through a fox attack! His eyes fell on a she-cat though and a purr escaped his throat. She would do. It would only take two of them

"Hellloooooo Beautiful!" He cooed mewing in a flirtacious tone to Mottledpaw. He waved his feathery tail back and forth before wrapping it around his paws. "Up for a dawn patrol around the borders?" He mewed more seriously this time.

"Oh hello Rushfeather" she replied in a cold tone, she was still sleepy and definitely wasn't in the mood for flirtatious games. "Oh of course, I'll come" she replied with a yawn, standing to her feet.

Mottledpaw walked towards Rushfeather, letting out a big stretch before reaching his side. "Alright, let's go then and make it quick" she mewed more softly as the pair began to leave camp.

"Alright, let's go then and make it quick" Rushfeather had a bitter taste in his mouth after that. Make it quick? He snorted padding out of the camp. "Patrols are a delicate process lovely. You can't make it quick you could miss some things. If we just run pass borders what if some of them IvyClan kitties are crossing the border. HMMMMMMMM?!?" He raised his fluffy tail as he walked. Shaking each paw. Really he probably should have grabbed his apprentice he was closing in on his warrior ceremony. He mumbled a few things under his breath. "Alright Mottledpaw what do you smell." He mewed. He made note of the mist settling down, he parted his jaws taking in the scents of IvyClan, they must have recently marked their borders...just recently too, squirrel, and a few thrush.

Mottledpaw chuckled at Rushfeather, trying not to seem rude, "Well, I can scent fresh Ivyclan trails. They've been here recently but have stayed inside of their own boarders, nothing much" she said as simple as she could. If the tom had caught her later on in the day maybe she'd be more warm and welcoming but a tired Mottledpaw is never a happy Mottledpaw.

"Possibly some prey too" she mewed, "Smells like either squirrel or mouse, I can't really tell the difference" she bluntly added on as she continued to groom her colourful pelt, not really seeming interested.

The senior warrior narrowed his eyes in annoyance at the she-cats disinterest in the task. "Missy I am a senior warrior, you are still an apprentice, Just because I am not your mentor doesn't mean I don't get the same respect. Perhaps I should tell Bearstar you aren't ready for your warrior assessment. Your brother will be made a warrior without you." He grumbled ever so slightly, digging his claws into a tree before climbing up a few branches before a small body dropped to the forest floor. It was a thrush. Silently he fell to the forest floor. "I'm one of few who have mastered the art of hunting in trees, let's see you do it." He mewed firmly. He wasn't going to take attitude from this apprentice. She needed to learn, and perhaps a delayed warrior ceremony would light a fire under her tail.

"I'm sure they'll be no need for that" she sassily responded, "And how would you like me to wake you up early, looking your worst and make you go on patrol? I want to look my best in case I see someone I know" She purred sarcastically though she meant no harm, she just hoped Rushfeather wouldn't take her bitter attitude seriously.

"Honestly, I've never tried hunting in trees and it looks fairly difficult. So I guess I can respect you if you live up to your claims" She purred soothingly as she approached the nearest tree, scenting the air and searching for the closest prey. SQUIRREL, She positioned herself in front of the tree before leaping onto it and scurrying up its trunk.

As Mottledpaw reached the thickest branches she picked up the scent of squirrel again, then one darted out of the corner of her eye. She dug her claws firmly into the branches of the tree as she crawled along them, slowly getting closer to the squirrel before finding out it was at the entrance to a nest. She allowed the squirrel to climb back inside before she darted to the hidden hole, as she peered inside she clearly spotted it's young.

Mottledpaw reached inside and grabbed one of the tiny squirrels before trying to rush down the tree with it in her mouth. Suddenly, she stumbled and fell down from the second to last branch. She hadn't injured herself and she'd managed to keep ahold of the baby squirrel although she'd landed on her back with her tail beside her. All she could do was grumble in embarrassment as her face appeared to be blushing.

Rushfeather raised a brow and chuckled to himself. "Not so easy is it?" His tail waved with amusement as she fell oh so gracefully from a branch. Certainly if there were any prey around the thump that came with the fall would have scared them all away. He started padding away, not even complimenting her for a first catch. "After that graceful thump we will have to look for prey elsewhere." He mewed. He supposed if they walked for a bit they would find something. After awhile he paused.

"This is something you need to master before your warrior ceremony." He mewed firmly. He looked up at the tree and saw a thrush and nodded. "It's something you can pass on to your apprentice one day. Not all birds go away in Leaf-bare, they just go thicker into the forest. If you can hunt in trees, you are a huge asset to your clan." He had taught his daughter how to do this as well, Swanfur, she was slightly older, than mottledpaw but not by much. "Well go ahead up you go. I'll catch ya if you fall. "

"Fine fine, you earn some of my respect" she quietly spat to herself, "and fine whatever, take me to a better area" she added coldly as the squirrel young escaped from her jaws, it wouldn't have fed a kit anyway. As Mottledpaw listened to the tom's change in voice, she realised how serious this could actually be as she eyed the thrush. "Alright then, this one will be an easy catch" she boasted with false confidence, trying not to let her last failure get to her as she dug her claws into the tree and slowly began to climb.

Mottledpaw reached the top of the tree in no time, making sure she wasn't seen by the thrush. As she angled her body correctly, she launched, easily grabbing the thrush and killing it instantly as she proudly carried it back down to Rushfeather. "See, I told you that I could do it" she mewed confidently as she boasted about her first decent tree catch.

The gray and white tom studied the she-cat as she climbed the tree. He nodded, making a few mental notes on some corrections. She watched as she caught the bird and came back down. He lashed his tail and puffed out his chest before giving a curt nod. "So you did. A bit messy but it's better than those who don't know how to do it at all." She gray and white tom stood up to move before dropping into a crouch and elongating his body. "Don't stay bunched up, always keep yourself long and downwind. It is VERY different from hunting on the ground." He rushed forward with quick speed across the ground not missing a step. "Can't shake the branches either, you must be quick and light weight." He looked up and leaped digging his claws into the bark, he kept his body long and slinked upwards until he was on the first branch.


He paused doing the same thing until he was hidden by the leaves. After a few moments a bird fell onto the ground with a loud thump, and Rushfeather came down shortly after. Not a single leaf rustled, nor did a branch shake. "That is how it is done." He swiped his tongue around his muzzles his long feather tail swept across the ground. "It takes practice but see, when you are a warrior and it's leaf bare and everyone is struggling you will have the upper paw"

Mottledpaw raised her chin as she had her five seconds of glory before snapping back to reality and realising that what she had done wasn't even that good. "Alright" she mewed simply as she dropped the thrush by her paws, watching Rushfeather go after another bird in the trees. Suddenly, a dead bird fell from the sky, must have been what Rushfeather had caught. "Impressive" she meowed as she stood up.

"Rushfeather I have a serious question" she mewed, she felt stupid that she had to ask such a thing but it had been on her mind for a while, "Since I have no tail, will that actually effect my balance and hunting skills or is it just something that cats say?" she mewed shyly as she pawed the ground. Her 'tail' had been a big insecurity of hers for a while since her brother used to tease her about it and had mocked her about her hunting skills, she had just wondered if it was actually true or she was overreacting.
