Yewpaw

Yewpaw paced around the camp, she was so bored. Her mentor was busy, her friends were all hunting without her and the camp was basically empty. Yewpaw did one more lap around the camp before spotting a lone she-cat, she quickly recognised her as Lavendersong and pelted towards her. "Hello Lavendersong! I'm so bored and I have nothing to do" the apprentice whined, although she kept her usual cheerful voice. "How have you been? I haven't really seen you for a while" she purred happily as she seated herself in front of the she-cat.

"I'm surprised you're not out hunting or patrolling with everyone else!" the little she-cat added as a grin plastered across her face, finally satisfied that she had found someone to talk too.

The fluffy white she-cat had decided to stay in camp, rather than go on another patrol. She was planning on going on a night patrol later on so she opted to keep her energy for that. She always thought night patrols required more stamina than those in the day, mostly because it was harder to see and night was the prime time for any sort of premediated attack, and since the rouges were lurking around, that was a possibility. She had been sitting down near the edge of the camp when a brown and white tabby bolted up to her. Lavendersong looked up and realised that it was Yewpaw, she'd saw her at Mudjaw's early warrior ceremony. Usually, a bit of sibling rivalry would have been apparent but, from what she'd saw from the older apprentice, Yewpaw had seemed genuinely pleased for her brother. It wouldn't be long before she was made a warrior herself, and when that happened, it just mattered that they were serving the clan.

From what she'd seen of Yewpaw already, it was pretty clear that she was a chatty one, not that Lavendersong minded, it was nice to have someone to talk to. It kept her mind off things. "Hello, Yewpaw," A soft smile appeared on her face as she shifted to a more comfortable position for a conversation. "I've been around, but everyone's been on their toes since the whole 'rouge thing.'" She shook her head, thinking back to the injuries that had been sustained, but she continued with the same cheerful voice, not allowing those dark thoughts to dampen the mood. She wasn't about to let those rouges ruin her day. "I've got a patrol later tonight, so I've been conserving my energy ready for it. You know how night patrols are, they're such a drag." Accompanied with the rolling of her mismatched eyes, the fluffy feline let out a soft giggle. She actually rather enjoyed the night patrols, just not at a time where the chance of getting attacked was so high.

"But enough about me! How are you, Yewpaw? Old enough to be a warrior yourself soon, eh? More duties... more work." She laughed, her curled ears bouncing slightly at the motion. It was nice to talk to someone about normal things, a nice break from the more negative happenings. "We still get told what to do, you know. Just with a nicer boss." She winked, referring to the dilute calico that was their deputy.

Yewpaw nodded kindly as Lavendersong greeted her, "Oh those rogues" the small tabby spat, "Mudjaw did fight bravely though!" she added positively. Yewpaw listened closely to what the pale she-cat had to say, "I haven't been on a patrol in a while, I love going out on night patrols!" Yewpaw mewed in jealousy, she'd be a warrior soon though so she wouldn't have to wait much longer she thought.

"I've been fine, not much going on although I'm so proud of my brother" she mewed kindly, "I wish I could just be a warrior now! I don't mind the extra work though since it'd be so exciting" she meowed excitedly at the mentioning of her apprenticeship ending soon.

"I don't mind getting bossed around, honestly! As long as I'm helping I don't really care" the tabby added cheerfully, her amber eyes glowing with excitement.

Ah, the enthusiasm of apprentices. Lavendersong thought back to when she had been one, it had been a while ago, when the clans were still a pair and not a trio, but she still remembered it like it was merely moons ago. It had been fun at first, learning all the skills and exploring the territory, then the newness had faded and it became a more serious affair. When your warriorship was on the horizon, you tended to buckle down and show everyone you could that you were worthy of a place in the warrior's den. She'd always been a little unsure of her place, as a kitten her parents had passed early, and though the other queens had tried their best to raise her as their own, they weren't able to love her as much as she needed at the time, so finding her own place in the clan became a very important thing to her.

Yewpaw was certainly a breath of fresh air, the tabby's energy was revitalising. It was nice to see someone who had been somewhat affected by the rouges and refusing to let them win, either mentally or physically. Lavendersong wasn't a fighter, she knew enough to get by, but generally she was a lost cause against a larger, more experienced opponent. She reckoned she was only alive due to the honour and refusal to kill a defeated opponent attitude that most of the clan cats had, but against rouges who would kill without hesitation, she was concerned that she wouldn't be able to put up much of a fight. "Soon, you'll be joining him in the warrior den." It would be nice to have their nests close to each other when Yewpaw did join them as a warrior, the white she-cat thought. "You don't mind getting bossed around?" Lavendersong made an exaggerated scoffing noise. "Do your duties, sure, but you can't do everything they ask you, or you'll find yourself being the one everyone comes to for a favour." Being helpful was a great quality, but she knew that there were some who would take advantage. Maybe she was being a hypocrite, because Lavendersong would drop everything to help one of her friends if they needed it.

Yewpaw's eyes still shone at the mention of the word 'warrior', soon she'd be in the warrior's den with Mudjaw, her brother. They could finally hunt and fight together again, just imagine all of the exciting border fights they'd win!. "Yep! me and Mudjaw will be some of the best warriors this clan has ever seen!" Yewpaw meowed happily.



"Anyway, I already am the one everyone comes to for a favour" the tabby mewed, mimicking Lavendersong's tone. "Anyway, I don't mind doing favours, it lets me know that everyone trusts me!" Yewpaw meowed loudly, letting her usual wide grin spread across her face as her fur bristled with excitement.

It looked like the younger she-cat was as stubborn as she was lively. Lavendersong wasn't going to stress the issue any longer, now that she'd shared her 'warning,' but she just hoped that there wouldn't ever be a time where her words actually came into play. Perhaps they never would, or perhaps it was a lesson Yewpaw would have to learn on her own, as was more commonly the case. She was still so young, even as an older apprentice, and there was still plenty the tabby didn't know. In Lavendersong's opinion, the world tended to be crueller to those least deserving.

She stopped herself, noticing her thoughts taking a darker note. The fluffy she-cat always tried to remain positive, at least on the outside, so she shook away the niggling voice in her head and changed the subject to something a little different. "Sooo, let's talk love." Lavendersong had learned a while ago that, if conversation was running dry, changing the subject to something completely random or unexpected usually kept it fresh. Plus, since early warriorship was usually the time when couples get together, freed from their apprentice restrictions, it might be relevant to the brown and white tabby soon. "Anyone you got your eye on? Oh, who do you think the cutest Ivycanner is? Appearance-based only." A hypothetical question, and she purposely kept it appearance only. If they started factoring in the personalities of certain clanmates, their attractiveness would fall to zero.

Yewpaw knew that Lavendersong wouldn't be satisfied with her answers and enjoying doing her clanmates favours. She didn't see why it was such a  bad thing though.

Yewpaw froze almost instantly, she knew that no cat would be satisfied with a single answer. She loved Hickorynose's striking pelt but Lavendersong had also recently caught her eye for her unique eyes and bright coat. She paused before answering, "Well, I couldn't give just one cat so I'll have to choose two" she meowed slowly, as if each word hurt her throat as she spoke. "I really like your pale pelt and unique eyes, I think it's really pretty! But I also like Hickorynose's bright colours and speckled nose so I couldn't really choose!" she mewed in a cheery but awkward tone, fidgiting her paws as she wasn't sure if she'd used the right words...

Lavendersong noticed the reaction her questions had resulted in, and she had to giggle at Yewpaw's expense. "Two?" A wider grin, if that was even possible, was plain to see on the feline's maw. She expected it, you couldn't just have one, not in Ivyclan, the clan of beautiful: Mistclanners were too plain in appearance and Mothclan... just ick. What she didn't expect was for the brown and white tabby to choose her as one of her two. "..." Lavendersong was officially speechless, not that it was too shocking, though, the white warrior had always been a bit chatty, she always had her opinions but didn't always feel the compelling need to share them. She was somewhere in the middle of the scale between over-talkative and silent. "My eyes? You like my eyes?" How confusing? She had always had a problem with them, growing up, her clanmates sometimes let slip that they found them confusing to look at. In a way, she couldn't blame them, eyes were supposed to be one solid colour, it was just how it was. So, for someone to have two different irises, it could be taken as either fascinating or maybe even disorientating for some. "Yewpaw, thank you! I don't think anyone's said that to me before! They usually don't like them or don't say anything," Her voice was slightly choked up, full of some emotion that she didn't want to name.

Luckily, Yewpaw didn't dwell, perhaps finding the situation a little awkward, which was understandable, and launched straight into her second choice. "Hickorynose..." Her voice trailed off as she called the tom to her mind, trying to picture him. Ah, yes, he was the red and white tabby, good hunter, if she was recalling the right tom. "Meh, he's alright, I think he's a little pelt-paranoid, though. His always impeccably groomed whenever I see him." She didn't care too much for her fur, keeping it to an acceptable standard but she wasn't about to waste too much time on it. "I can see why you chose him. Have you two spent much time together?" It was said casually, as if she didn't care too much and said it purely out of mild curiosity, but Lavendersong did genuinely want to know.

Now, it wasn't fair for her to expect the younger cat to answer her questions when she didn't answer them herself. "I would choose... hmm, this is harder than I thought it would be." Her odd eyes flickered away for a second as she contemplated her choices. Lavendersong wasn't that close with that many cats in the clan so it was a good thing they were basing their choices on appearance only. "I think... that I have too many choices. I have three." She paused to laugh, but, as mentioned before, most of her choices were based purely on the aesthetics. "Snowdapple is pretty good looking, and so is Roseblaze. Don't tell Sparrowcry." There was one more, and it showed in her slightly sudden reluctance to reveal her third and final choice. "Then, I would pick you, Yewpaw. I think, although your pelt is common, your amber eyes bring it to life." With that said, Lavendersong realised that she didn't have as much nervousness with saying it than she thought she would've had. It just seemed like the right thing to say.

"Yep! I'd love eyes like yours!" she purred cheerfully, "Yewpaw, thank you! I don't think anyone's said that to me before! They usually don't like them or don't say anything,". Yewpaw was shocked that no one else found them as pretty as she did, her face generally showed her shock. "I'm surprised! They're generally so pretty!" she mewed happily.

Yewpaw closed her eyes for a brief moment to remember the fun time she had out with Hickorynose, they played hide and seek and he showed her some hunting techniques. Their playdate had only been interrupted by those rogues! "He's nice though! Me and him did go out training once, he showed he tracking and hunting techniques!" she blurted out loudly as the memories came flooding back.

"Don't worry! I won't tell anyone!" She purred, "I think Roseblaze is pretty too but not really my type" she added along. "Then, I would pick you, Yewpaw. I think, although your pelt is common, your amber eyes bring it to life." Yewpaw fidgeted her paws as she didn't know how to respond, "Thanks! I often get told my eyes are pretty! Still prefer yours though!" the little she-cat responded, grinning with glee at the compliment.
