Liongaze has been near motionless for the past… well almost the entire day, really. It had been a day or two since Snaketongue’s death and the terrible wounds that Liongaze had returned with (that most of his clanmates had attributed to the ‘rogue attack’ that had supposedly killed Snaketongue, but had really come from Spottedheart) were just starting to heal. While some cats had whispered that it was very suspicious that Liongaze had now twice been the sole survivor of a patrol, few had cause to question him. It was perfectly believable to think that Fattail would walk in front of a train as he was never known for paying attention to anything, and there were even some cats who had said that it’s possible that Fattail would walk in front of a train on purpose simply to get out of a hunt (which Fattail would say was ridiculous yet that’s how quite a few of his clanmates had always believed him to be). As for Snaketongue… with a rogue group’s recent invasion of the clan Gathering, well most cats are eager to believe ill of those dirty rogues. That and it seems unlikely that Snaketongue alone would have been able to deal so much damage to a big tom like Liongaze. Even so, the so-called coincidence left some extremely superstitious cats believing that Liongaze was cursed and that all the cats close to him experienced grave misfortune.
No matter what any cat believed, it is clear that the event had gotten to Liongaze. He had been depressed after Fattail’s death, but he had still been functional. Now, with the recent loss of his sister and the death of yet another clanmate, Liongaze had ceased functioning as a productive clanmate. He had to agree with the clanmates who believed him cursed, except Liongaze happened to know the exact cause of the curse. And… the curse had seemingly affected nearly every single cat Liongaze loved and it seemed to also strike cats unfortunate enough to be close to Lion at the wrong time. Smudgepaw was dead, Boarspark was crippled, Elkpaw was seemingly losing her mind, two patrolmates dead. All of it because of Liongaze. All because he thought he could train in the starless forest and not be swallowed up by it. It’s a bitter thought, now, that Lionkit had wished he had all the skills of his Dark Forest mentor Spottedheart. Not only is Liongaze stronger than Spottedheart now, but he is Spottedheart. The Dark Forest cat had skillfully taken the kit who had fallen into his claws and created a living version of himself. A cat who seems so sweet and gentle but can go from loyal clanmate to rageful killer in the blink of an eye. The only difference is that Liongaze wishes he could go back. He wants to go back to that lost little ginger kit under that moonless sky and carry the kit back to safety, where the Dark Forest couldn’t corrupt the young tom who had been so eager to learn. If only.
Liongaze is paying no mind to anything happening in camp, as he is so lost in his thoughts and grief, not just for his lost clanmate but for his own lost soul.
