The moon shown down it silvery gleam outside Mistclan's cavernous home, reflecting in a dazzling shimmer through the curtain of water that rushed in a tone that most of the clan had surely grown deaf to. The muted noise was a comforting one as the ruddy black and cream tabby tom bunched up his resolve with his muscles and hopped atop Bearstar's usual perch.
It was a rather rare occurrence, but certainly not unheard of for one's deputy to call together the clan for a meeting in the absence of their leader. And while Bearstar was one to always do right by her clan, not ever wanting to miss a second of the time her large family spent together, even she needed a break. It wasn't known why the brown she-cat was sitting this ceremony out, the details of her ailments kept to herself in order to minimize worry, but it wasn't as if she was completely paws-off during the whole ordeal. Luckily for Sabletail, his leader had managed to quell his nerves by talking out with him her ideas the night prior. And yet, his wide paws still trembled slightly against the unfamiliar stone. In an even tone, the dark tabby bellowed out with his honey-smooth voice,"May all cats old enough to cross the waterfall come forward for a clan meeting!"
As the cats approached, Sabletail gave a wide, wobbly smile. The air about him was unfamiliar, but warm and welcoming. After all, it wasn't as if the tom was disliked by his peers. Perhaps it would go by more smoothly than he initially thought it would.
Deepening his grin, Sabletail's amber eyes flashed brightly against the gray backdrop of their home, pulling his clanmates attention to his words. "Well, I hope I don't have any fleas in my fur- I'm practically jittering in my paw steps! Here's to me not having to be back up here for many moons to come after this; Bearstar's resting up and should be back in business soon. But we believed today was as good as any day for some new warriors. Wouldn't you agree? Be the pride of my night!!" There was a hearty humor to his words as his eyes glinted from the twinkling cast by the waterfall. "Finchpaw, Stagpaw, Turtlepaw, Flintpaw, Fernpaw, and Rainpaw- would you step forward and join me?"
"Finchpaw, your devoted loyalty to Mistclan has been recognized by all and fills us with much pride as your clanmates. You undoubtedly carry with you a loud voice which you and Finchtongue have masterfully crafted into one which carries the strong message of warriorhood, and with that you shall be called Finchcall.
"Stagpaw, Quailfur has told me much of how you've grown and I, too, have seen it. From a jumpy little cat, you have grown strong and it makes me very proud to know that you'll over reach greater heights as a warrior of Mistclan. Leap far, Stagleap. We all know you will!
"Turtlepaw, your whimsy and loving nature has been one precious treasure not quite shared with many until you’ve allowed it to shine through as an apprentice, and it is truly one cherished by your peers. You keep the playful wiles of a warrior alive with your spirit, Turtleshine, and I hope you keep them alive for many moons more.
“Flintpaw, you have been quite the mature one among your peers, I have been told. A respectable warrior through and through, I know you’ll make as you help to guide your clanmates as you had in apprenticehood. From now on, you shall be called Flintfur; may your resolve be as strong and dependable as the stone which protects our clan.
“Fernpaw, I seen and shared in the generosity you share with your clanmates, and it is not a quality most cats have. Even the strongest warriors carry with them a balance of reason and serenity, a quality which you are ample in. Mistclan is proud to stand by you and your judgements, Fernpatch, and we hope you can be patient with our shortcomings.
“Rainpaw, so soft-spoken yet so determined. You are a warrior with a golden heart, showing kindness to all those who cross your path. And while some may view this as weakness, your clanmates see it as true strength. With the good will a true warrior possesses, Rainstreak shall be your warrior name.”
Sabletail dipped his head with a glowing smile as his clanmates’ voice rang out in loud praise. Such a large collection of warriors, albeit relatively green, was definitely one to be proud of. The next Gathering would certainly be one to remember, with how many warriors had been named and with the kitts born this moon. The deputy was practically beaming to himself as he waited for the bustling of Mistclan to die down before continuing.
Raising his head, the tom’s eyes moved to the gathering to young cats perched by their mothers, ansty and wiggling about. Among them, he spied his own daughter as she clambered over the tabby form of Lilycloud and the deputy stifled the puff of a humorous sigh. ”My, how the moons tend to fly when you’re having fun, don’t they?” Such a question seemed to be directed at the kits gathered as a few clammered aloud in reply, leaving the deputy to chuckle fondly. ”Yes yes, but even the fun must make way for responsibly and a fair amount of you have reached the age where you are ready to take the first steps towards warriorhood. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean the end of your fun; in fact, you could say it’s just beginning! Nectarkit, Honeykit, Featherkit, Wingkit, Flamekit, and Petalkit- please step forward!”
Sabletail’s features softened and tail swished behind him smoothly. ”Nectarkit, I have seen your manners and kind spirit throughout the camp and must say that such qualities are ones which are the makings of a truly splendid warrior. I have been made aware of your clumsiness and frequent visits to Silverfang, and believe that through our shared habits, you would suit me well as my own apprentice. It has been a little bit since I have taken an apprentice, so please treat me fairly!” He gave the little she-kit a playful wink as they touched noses. From what he had gleaned from his good friend in the medicine cats’ den, she had the best chances of being a warrior with his teaching.
Continuing on, the deputy purred as he called out the rest of Cherryheart’s kits. ”Honeykit, you are quite the skittish one, i’ve seen. Such a quality isn’t necessarily one unbefitting of a warrior, but it much been properly cultivated into a wisened wariness. I believe Coldfang will do an excellent job of honing your nerves while allowing you to open up a bit to your clanmates.” Coldfang was a bit of a shady one, at least to Sabletail, but not one he distrusted. He was a clanmates, after all. He simply hoped that the brightness the young she-kit would offered would bring some light to the haughty warrior.
“Featherkit, oh Featherkit. I’ve heard it through the waterfall the numerous times you’ve caused your mother some strife. It will take a stern warrior to help you to see how the wonders of warriorhood outshine those of a lone cat who acts on their own. I trust Stoatwhisker, despite her youth, to guide you down the right path towards warriorhood.” The deputy had recognised the younger warrior as one who spent much time with Saltweed in their youth, and figured that Stoatwhisker was one to have nerves of steel and the tolerance of a saint to withstand his steely cold niece. She would pair well with the little troublemaker.
“Wingkit, you are full of love and it shows greatly. Still, you have much to learn in understanding the feelings of others and how to love them as much as those which surround you. Cottontangle will do well to help shape the love which you so open share. May you both grow from this experience.” Sabletail shot the usually grumpy white warrior a warm smile, hoping Cottontangle wouldn’t mind the companionship of the peppy apprentice.
Flamekit, I have seen the way your clanmates have looked at you and the way you return their gazes. You have a warm heart about you and despite your past, I believe that you will make for one of the greatest warriors of Mistclan. Allow the gentle nature of Pebbleshade to help you both acclimate into your family. I know you will do well together.” Sabletail’s heart swelled at the thought. Yes, perhaps it was a bit odd for him to put the two together, but he hoped that as former outsiders, Flamekit and Pebbleshade would bond more closely. The two deserved to have the close bonds that cats of Mistclan shared.
The deputy finally sighed as his gaze moved to the creamy red kit bouncing, burning a pair of holes into his hide with her stare. ”Petalkit, you have much to learn in respect and tact alike. Your vigor and zest for life as a warrior is certainly admirable, but you definitely need the guidance of a warrior with great experience. Rushfeather will be your mentor, as I believe he will refine your wild side into that of a respectable warrior.”
The dark tabby swept his silken cream tail around his paws, his ears perked as his listened to the voices of Mistclan roar with pride. His eyes dashed to Bearstar’s den, hoping to catch an approving glance of his leader and friend’s eyes. While he thanked Starclan for her continuation as leader, the tom was happy to have gotten a chance to greet his clanmates in such a fashion. It would be a tradition that the deputy would be looking forward for moons to come. With a hearty yowl, he concluded,”Well, that ends that! Congratulations to those with new names- I’m proud of you all and can’t wait to see your progress! Celebrate and be merry, but don’t forget, warriors- you have a long night ahead of you!”
