The screen door opened and closed with a clatter. A smooth furred siamese she-cat trotted out, her paws moving daintily on the wooden patio. She jumped down the steps and bounded across the neat trimmed yard and onto the fence. She looked out across the land with wide, sapphire eyes. She was looking for someone.
The siamese cat was plump and healthy, well taken care of by her twolegs. A baby blue collar dangled from her neck with a tag on it that read ‘Toffee’. Toffee’s ears swiveled back and forth, listening for him. She leaned forward when a rustle came from the distant forest. There he was. A thinner, scarred Havana brown tom cat. He was no kittypet like Toffee was, he had learned to live in the elements and survive. She purred at the sight of him.
You see, the two had meetings nearly every night. The moon and her twoleg’s den provided enough light for both of them. He jumped up onto the fence and sat beside her. The two of them had met each other by Toffee finding him rummaging through the trash. He had been very noisy and Toffee was never one to fight. They had fallen for each other since then.
“Hello.” He purred. Toffee purred with him and nuzzled his neck, leaning against him. “Hello.” She said.
Once she had lifted her head back up he spoke. “Do you mind if I ask you something?” His voice was rough and calloused.
She nodded, “Of course.”
He sighed and looked away from her for a moment, then looked back. She always imagined that his eyes were a lush, shining green forest. “Do you want to come with me?” Toffee’s ears drooped a little.
“What do you mean?” Her voice faltered.
“I mean do you want to come to the forest with me?” He emphasized.
She looked away, troubled and uncertain. What would that mean for her? What would that mean for her twolegs? He reached forward and rested his paw on hers. “I will take care of you, I’ll teach you how to hunt and how to fight. It’ll be just us.”
Toffee sat there, tight-lipped. She turned to him and furrowed her kitty-brows. “Listen, I don’t know. I don’t want to leave my twolegs!” He sighed.
“I won’t force you to come with me. Just know this is the only way we’ll truly be together.” Toffee pinned her ears back.
“Oh, yeah? Why don’t you become a kittypet and see what it’s like?” Her tail-tip twitched back and forth in annoyance.
“Toffee, a kittypet life is no life for me. Out in the forest you’re free to come and go as you please. Why wouldn’t you want that?” He tried to empathize with her but for him it was hard to see himself in other’s shoes.
The siamese cat gritted her teeth. “This is my home. I’m well cared for and I love my twolegs.” She explained, straining to stay calm. For a few heartbeats he just looked at her, as if considering if this was truly worth it or not.
She sighed. “Listen, I love you,” His ears pricked. “But this is no easy choice. If you let me think about it, I’ll give you an answer at dawn.”
“Okay, fine.” He reasoned with her. “I’ll be back then.”
He rubbed his cheek against hers and jumped off the fence, retreating to the forest. She stared after him as his dark pelt blended in with the shadows and he disappeared. She turned, jumped from the fence, and hopped back up the wooden steps. She meowed and clawed at the door until it opened and she stepped inside, ready to lie down in her bed, perhaps for the last time, and sleep.
Toffee awoke at dawn and ran away with her lover.
