The young tom cat awoke bright and early in his soft, bright red bed. The sun’s rays shone through the closed blinds, creating rectangles of light on the carpeted floor. Pizza climbed out of his bed and stretched his legs, yawning throughout the process. Once he was fully awake and ready to go he slipped into his owner’s room and jumped up onto their bed. He meowed and purred against both their faces until one of them, a woman with dark skin and darker hair, batted him away and the other, another woman with pale skin and blonde hair that was darkened at the roots, finally got up and dragged herself into the kitchen to put food into his and Sugar’s bowls. She trudged back into the room she came from when she was done and closed the door behind her.
Pizza gulped down his food, ready to get out and face the day, then ran back into his room once he had finished. He trotted over to Sugar’s bed, which was white rather than red and was seated next to their cat tower. He nudged the she-cat, “Sugar, wake up!” his voice was a little above a whisper.
Sugar grumbled and pushed him away languidly. Pizza jumped up onto the side of her bed and placed his front paws on her shoulders, moving her from side to side. Sugar was taller and bigger than he was, with a longer face and larger ears. She was shaped more like a rectangle with rounded edges and Pizza was more like a square or a circle. And Pizza was still a young cat, so moving her around wasn’t easy for him.
The she-cat gave a groan, “Fine, I’m up!” Pizza’s paws slid off her shoulders as she got up. She stretched her legs, in no hurry at all, and trudged into the kitchen. Pizza was prancing on his toes the entire time, attempting to keep himself from saying, “Hurry, hurry!” all the while.
“Alright,” Sugar started to the door with Pizza on her heels, “where are we off to today?” Throughout the past year or so, she had learned to tolerate the young tom’s eagerness and infinite energy. Sugar was slower than he was and more no-nonsense but made an exception for him.
“The park! It’s so nice and sunny out today!” he giggled, stepping in front of her and sliding out of the cat door. She followed him out and down the steps to the ground floor where they made it to the sidewalk and strolled down toward the park.
Sugar realized Pizza wasn’t wrong when he said it was a pretty day out: The sun was shining, dew was on the grass, some twolegs were out on their daily runs. They finally made it to the park and Sugar took to finding a patch of sun near a bench and basking in it while Pizza had other ideas. He took a quick glance around the park and spotted another cat and, without thinking, as always, sprinted over to them and said hello. “Hi! M’names Pizza! Love morning, don’t cha think?”
