Here at Carried Home, we are pretty relaxed when it comes to names. As long as it sounds like it would realistically fit, we will tend to accept it. However, if you're still having issues naming your new warrior, we're here to help!
Naming Basics
Warrior names are split into two parts - the prefix or the suffix. The prefix is the part that doesn't change during the cat's like, for example 'Fire'. The suffix is the second part, for example -kit, -paw, -heart, -star.
The prefix should do one of three things:
1) Describe the cat's appearance. An example would be a black cat named "Night-".
2) Honour a previous warrior. An example would be Firestar naming his kit Leafkit after Spottedleaf.
3) Describe an event that happens during or just before the birth. An example would be a kit named Stormkit because he was born during a storm.
When describing appearance, the name should describe the part of the appearance that stands out about the cat. An all black cat with a white paw should not be named Whitekit as this is not the stand out appearance trait for them. However if a marking is unusual, that would stand out and therefore could be used as a naming basis - for example, Twoface.
Do not name your cat after the colour of their eyes. All kits are born with blue eyes and will have been named before their eye colour changes to their adult eye colour. Parents would not know that Yellowkit would grow up to have yellow eyes.
Once you have the prefix sorted, you can pick a suffix. A suffix should describe one of four things:
1) A stand out skill
2) A stand out personality trait
3) Apperance
4) An achievement that is to be honoured
This is the part where you get the be extra creative. Suffixes are words such as -fire and -claw. You have to think about what these words could represent. For example, -fire could mean a fiery personality or that they blaze through the battlefield like a fire through a forest. -claw could mean that they have long claws or that they are a good fighter.
A good name is a name that not only sounds good, but also one that can be justified. So, let's take Littledash for example. Little tells us that he is a small cat, and -dash tells us that he is fast. We now know that Littledash is a small, agile cat.
Another example could be Blackheart. -heart is generally used to show a devoted cat, generally to the clan and the warrior code. So, from this we know that Blackheart is a black cat that is extremely loyal to his clan.
Accepted Names
At Carried Home, we accept all canon prefixes and suffixes, as well as any that fit and feel realistic. As the forum is set in North America, this means that you can use North American plants and animals as well as British ones from the books. This means that you could use bear, for example, or wolf.
Unlike tribe cats, clan cats may be named tiger, leopard, or lion. They may not, however, be named after precious gems.
