When Lilydawn got the whif of a new litter, she was excited. Especially after this war, they desperately needed new numbers. She had bounced to the nursery with joy and excitement in her pale blue eyes. Her shaky pawsteps slowed as the familar scent of her own mother, and milk, filled her senses and filled a knot in her throat. Slowly, she crept her way to the den.
Firstly, and foremostly, there was something wrong. These kittens... They didn't look like any of the cats in this clan. Her abnormally long teeth clenched in fear, and she took a step towards them before nudging the sleeping bodies.
"Aren't they beautiful?" The queen below mewed, almost startling the apprentice as she believed she was asleep. Of course she wasn't. A question lingered on her tongue though, and without even mentioning how cute they were, the usually bubbly feline spoke with a serious tone.
"Mother... Who is their father?" The words rolled off her tongue, making Briarfrost freeze. Lilydawn could tell she'd done something wrong, and the fur along her shoulder bristled.
"Their father is Sabletail... Of Mistclan." Briarfrost softly replied, before continuing. "But... They need to be with their father too. So, three are going with him."
Lilydawn turned her head away as she finished, to hide the anger in her eyes and keep herself from looking at the kits. "You followed Wolfclaw then. Betrayed our clan." She muttered, with a dash of venom in her tone. "Do you think it was fair, fair for Sunnyday, Stormynight, and me to grow up without a parent?!"
"No, but-" the blue and white tabby started, however her older daughter had turned and left, only leaving a messy trail behind her.
-- Two Moons Later --
Ever since the kits were born, shortly after being split, Lilydawn refused to visit her mother. There was only one sole kitten left: the tiny tabby resembling her mother had fading kitten syndrome, and simply didn't make it. It broke Lilydawn's heart: Another lost sibling, like the ones who'd been sent to another traitor and her own adopted sister, Asterpaw. Her unspoken rage grew with her mother, and she couldn't stand to even see her face.
One day, while Beetleshade was out, and it was just Lilydawn folding and sorting herbs in the den, she could hear footsteps behind her. The sweet scent of milk and flowers filled her nose, usually comforting they'd only brought foul emotions.
"Lilydawn." The queen spoke, while the apprentice only flicked an ear in response. "Why haven't you come to visit me?"
"You're a traitor. You told me to forget about Wolfclaw, he left us. But, you left my sisters. You betrayed the clan, for another cat." Lilydawn cooly spoke, as she flicked some dock into it's proper pile.
"I didn't leave them. They deserve to have a father." The queen mewed in response, before taking a seat. "Love-"
"Don't call me love. As soon as you got over him you looked for another cat."
"That's... That's not true! I'm allowed to get a new mate, besides, that's not your business about what I do."
"Tell me what I am, then. Do you see me as a warrior, equal to you? What about your healer? Or do you still see the weak little kitten that couldn't even jump after a butterfly?" Lilydawn hissed, her tail lashing. "Face it. You went wrong."
"Lilydawn... Calm down-"
"Don't tell me to calm down!" She snapped, spinning around with a tail lash. "Don't expect me to let you walk in after doing this to me, to the clan! I stop being a little kitten, and you do this!"
"I am your mother!" Briarfrost retorted, getting to her paws as pelt bristled up.
"My mother wouldn't tear apart her kits for some different clan! My mother would fight for them to stay with her!" At this point, the feline had looked down at the queen, her eyes cold. "Get out."
"Don't tell me what to-"
Suddenly, the usually sweet, timid medicine apprentice lunched fowards, smacking the blue and white cat with her paw. No claws, of course, but she didn't need to draw blood. All she had to do was prove her point. Briarfrost's eyes widened, as she recoiled back before snarling her reply:
"You're not my daughter. Leave me and my family alone."
Those were her last words, before she spun around and stormed out. Lilydawn looked after her, a hollow pang in her heart before she turned around and sat back down. If she didn't want to have her in the family, fine. She tried to numb back the tears with those words, however in moments the feline had dipped her head fowards and hid her her silent tears.
