Foggy air surrounded the MistClan leader where she sat by the waterfall entrance, her pelt gathering frosty droplets. It had been a difficult moon- no cure had ever turned up for that new plague. Each clan had suffered, and she suspected the effects would remain apparent for many moons to come. But, to turn her thoughts towards a less dismal horizon, the apprentices had gone through it largely unaffected. And that meant many more warriors to carry them through to New-Leaf. Taking a final, contemplative look at her own reflection, Bearstar flicked the water from her ears and strode across the camp to leap up to the ledge. "All cats old enough to cross the waterfall, gather below for a clan meeting." Resting on her haunches as the cats gathered below, she took comfort in the amount of cats that remained. Their losses could have been far greater.
"Leaf-bare is still fairly young, yet it has been an exceptionally cruel one. The worst of it seems to have passed, however, and I believe we are strong enough to move on into the future. And, to that end, we have a few young cats ready to move up in the clan." She browsed the assembled cats for a few certain apprentices, calling them up. "Blossompaw, Meteorpaw, Mistypaw, Ripplepaw. Please step forward."
Nodding at the young cats, Bearstar spoke once they were all situated, "Blossompaw, your quiet nature is well-known- like a leaf, you move almost silently through the world. And so you will be named Blossomleaf."
"Meteorpaw, you-" as she began to address the joyful she-cat, Meteorpaw, seemingly distracted until just now, turned back to attention so quickly she lost her footing, flopping ungainly on the floor. Bearstar's whiskers twitched with amusement. "Meteorpaw, your bright, happy spirit carries those around you through these hard times. Sadness falls away around you, and that is why your name will be Meteorfall. Though I admit, your move just now certainly cemented the name. " She moved on to the next apprentice with a light purr.
"Mistypaw, for one so young you have a... very distinct attitude towards some of your fellow clanmates. Your sharp claws and vicious grasp of words are known to many an eager young tom, and perhaps they agree that Mistysting is a fitting new name for you." There was a hint of good-natured teasing to her voice, but it dropped as she looked at the fourth apprentice.
"Ripplepaw. Your past has changed you, but you remain here with us. You will be named Ripplefade- not simply because your old self has faded away, but because, like the dawn, you have the potential to fade in to a brighter future." She paused to let each new warrior's name be called a few times, welcoming them officially into their new ranks before waving her tail to dismiss them.
"While the warriors' den will be making room for four new members, the nursery will be very quiet tonight. Sootkit, come forward." She waited for the young tom to wade through the crowd. "For the duration of your training you will be Sootpaw. You are young, yet you have faced undue hardship- and remained courageous in spite of it all. Someone as eager as you needs a mentor who can keep up. Frigidglow has the right combination of responsibility and humor to be your mentor." The new apprentice's name echoed through the cave for a few moments, and Bearstar waited patiently for it to quiet down.
"That is all for this meeting. Remember, I am available for any pressing concerns, as is Milktail. Enjoy your new nests, young ones, and prepare for the next day's work. We need to remain strong in this season, but that doesn't mean we have to lose all our sense of joy." With that, she leapt from the ledge, officially ending the clan meeting.
